2006 MIDDLE COUNTRY RETIREES' ASSOCIATION 2007

MCRA-MINUTES-MCRA

ABRIDGED

Regular Meeting – October 24, 2006

The meeting was called to order by President Michael Daly with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for deceased members.

Michael introduced Diane Caudullo, President of the Centereach Civic Association, who would spoke to us concerning some of the issues the Civic Association is addressing concerning Centereach and Selden. She informed us that for the past thirty or forty years our community has suffered from poor planning. The roads were not designed for the town and no consideration was given to the style or positioning of buildings. At the present time many new communities are now being built with a plan in mind. She informed us that the Civic Association represents the youth, families, schools, retirees, etc. and it wants our input as to what we would like to have fixed and changed. Key issues are the repaving and redesigning of roads and buildings, sidewalks, and landscaped areas. The Civic Association has already eliminated storage facilities and is now working on a new medical park. It helped redesign the new CVS and now Walgreens is planning to have a beautiful landscape for their new building. There is a definite need to take down some old buildings and put up new ones, and we do have the power to tell them what designs we feel would work in our neighborhood. These are some of the problems that they have and she asked for our support. On Friday, October 27th, there will be a meeting at Newfield High School in Selden where one can indicate what he or she would like to have fixed or changed in our community. On Saturday, October 28th there will be a meeting at Centereach H.S. which will include a little tour up and down Middle Country Road where one can get out of the cars at different locations. This is the day to give your input and if you can make it, bring a friend. Another meeting will be held on Monday, October 30th which will inform the public what we believe is the general consensus plan. Monday night the coalition will meet with professionals to see what is reasonable and what is not reasonable. Diane informed us there is a great deal of money available in grants so these improvements will not have an effect on our taxes. Diane thanked us for inviting her and urged everyone to try to attend the meetings she outlined and to get involved. Michael thanked Diane and said he has not seen such enthusiasm for the improvement of community in a long time.

Anne Bedard informed us about her recent trip where a group went to lunch and then to Uncle Guissepes. There is another trip planned to John Howards located near the mall. Anne asked each of us to bring something to our November meeting for our Chinese Auction raffle. The success of this raffle could help defray the cost of our luncheons.

Rose Tcyz gave the September financial report and a motion to accept the report was made and seconded. The report as adopted.

Michael informed us that our membership has now reached over 400. He also announced that the library is giving a literacy program and it is looking for help. Michael announced that at our next meeting our guest speaker will be Mary Ellen Dixon who will speak to us about "Skills for Life" to include the benefits in the Beauty Culture Program as well as other initiatives for senior citizens. In the spring we will have a guest speaker, a Health Education teacher turned physical ed trainer, Melinda Dobrin, who will talk to us about low impact physical exercise.

Michael also addressed the need for help as we need someone to handle refreshments. He also mentioned that we needed someone to replace Fred as our representative to the coalition, and Ed Reynolds, a former Board of Education member, volunteered.

Audrey Prentiss was introduced as a new member to our association.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made and it was seconded. Respectfully submitted, Gladys Gregnoli
