2005 MIDDLE COUNTRY RETIREES' ASSOCIATION 2006

MCRA-MINUTES-MCRA

ABRIDGED

Regular Meeting – May 23, 2006

The meeting was called to order by President Michael Daly with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence for deceased members. The minutes of the April meeting were read and a motion to accept the minutes was made and seconded. Minutes adopted.

Michael asked that three e-mails received from people who visited our website, and a thank you letter he wrote to Superintendent of Schools, Leonard Adler, be read so that all present could share in their contents.

Janet Mager asked the one gentleman attending the meeting to identify himself and he stood up and introduced himself as Joseph Wolfinger.

Joan O’Grady opened a discussion concerning the increase of scholarship monies. She was concerned that expenditures such as mailings cost a considerable amount, and she feels that our income is not sufficient to meet any increase in the scholarships. She advised that no one gives more than $1000.00 in scholarships and that our $750.00 contribution is one of the highest awards given. However, Dorothy Auer felt that we could meet the increase by possibly eliminating some of the expenses such as sending out postcards notifying the members of the meetings and increasing the amount we charge for our luncheons. A suggestion was made to e-mail members or have a line robin to notify them about our meetings in order to cut down on expenses. Finally, a motion was made to table the increase in scholarships until next year and it was seconded.

Many members voiced a concern over one person being in charge of any one area because of the fear that if something were to incapacitate that person no one would know where to begin to take over. This issue is one that will be discussed at next year’s meetings.

Rose Tisz gave the following financial report. Savings: $12,562.04 Checking: $5,581.58 One Year Certificate: $2,566.92 Total: $20,710.54

Joan O’Grady thanked everyone for all the well wishes she received while she was under the weather.

Ruth Greenberg advised that we only have about 65 people attending the luncheon which is a much lower number than usual. Since the luncheon costs us $28.00 and we are only charging $25.00 we have to make up $3.00 for every ticket. It was suggested that we hold an auction or a 50/50 at the luncheon to augment the expenses.

Carol Kirschner introduced our guest speaker, Loretta Piscatella, who is an adult reference librarian for the Middle Country Library. Ms. Piscatella mentioned that a new catalogue was sent out which would inform us about all the services that are offered by the library. Some of the services offered are as follows:

There is a mail box library which is offered for homebound people in the district, but it is also for people who are out of commission for a short time. This service mails books, dvd’s, etc. to those people who are unable to get to the library.

Those people who are interested in seeking career counseling should be aware that this service is available in the Centereach library

Middle Country Library has a membership with Literacy Suffolk which tutors drop outs and all those individuals who went to school but never learned to read or write. At the present time there are 700 people on a wait list for this service. There is a great need for tutors so if you would like to volunteer, or if you know someone who would like to be a tutor, they should attend one of the upcoming question and answer sessions that will be held at the Centereach library.

Another comparatively new program, called GrandPACTT is for children and grandparents who work together learning to use computers and educational software.

Ms. Piscatella offered some flyers and leaflets pertaining to some of these services and Michael thanked her for a very informative presentation.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 PM

Respectfully submitted, Rose Biscardi
