My mother says, "Unless one knows the past, one is bound to repeat it!"
If any member would like to get the past out of his or her system, writing a description of ours (MCRA) might just be the medicine needed! Give it a try and submit a draft at the next meeting or via e-mail (mteachd@hotmail.com). You could be recognized as the next F. Scott Fizgerald. Ciao!
Here then is a beginning of that (MCRA) history:
MCRA, the Middle Country Retirees Association, was originally formed in July, 1987. The original officers were: John Pavacic (President), Virginia Galgano (First Vice-President), Edith Gallope (Second Vice-President), Fred Fitz (Treasurer), Katherine Murphy (Secretary) and Dominik Veraldi (Counselor).
Others who played a part in the founding of the association were Rose Biscardi, Jack Ryan, Joe Muller, Warren Hoffmann and John Brinton.
Originally, MCCSD promised those who retired prior to June 30, 1989 100% individual and family medical coverage without limit in recognition of their prior service and retirement at 55.
July 1, 1989 MCCSD, acting on its own, reduced the benefits of the pre-1989 retirees.
The “NEW” Middle Country Retiree's Association held its first meeting on 9/28/1989. At the meeting of 9/28/1989 MCRA, membership was made aware that MCCSD had backtracked on its original promise of 100% individual and family coverage for pre-1989 retirees. Membership affected was asked to sign and return a notice of claim on behalf of pre-1989 retirees to MCRA.
The Board of Education met in closed session on 1/09/1990. It was at a subsequent open session with MCCSD on 1/22/1990 that John Pavacic, President of MCRA, made an impassioned presentation to the Board of Education on the agreement with pre-1989 retirees. MCRA invited the Board of Education to its open meeting on 2/09/1990.
On 7/01/1990, MCCSD reinstituted 100% coverage for pre-1989 retirees.
On 7/01/1992 MCCSD took full medical coverage away a second time setting a cap of $1,479,597 after which costs were to be distributed equally among retirees.
In October 2003, MCRA held a series of meetings on the subject with the Superintendent of Schools of MCCSD (Mr. Ted Adams) At its December 10, 2003 meeting, the Board of Education of MCCSD voted to return 100% coverage for pre-1989 as originally agreed upon. The arrangement was memorialized in an agreement dated February 15, 2004; signed by the retirees affected and by MCCSD Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Leonard Adler).
Thus, the matter was concluded in an intelligent manner acceptable to both sides, thanks to the good will of both sides.
