After some time, John's guitar became his best friend. He played his guitar at times up to 15 hours a day. John, once came very close to being in Frank Zappa's band. He stood in line for the audition for hours, but then "chickened out". At the age of 15, John saw his first Peppers concert. The Peppers were playing at the Variety Arts Centre in Los Angeles, California. That concert changed his life forever. "From that point on, their music meant everything to me." John has stated. John had met the Peppers right before before Hillel Slovak died. John was asked by Hillel after a RHCP concert in LA, "Would you still like the Peppers if they got so popular that they played the L.A. forum?" John replied, "No, it would ruin the whole thing, that's great about the band." In 1992 John left the band. In 1998, John rejoined the band, bringing the mighty foursome back together, and better than ever!
"I wanted to play the way that people play who invent something original and cool and colorful to do based on the fact that they have the limitations technically, because they developed their style as soon as they learned how to play. I'm talking about people in new wave and punk rock. I wanted every song to sound like that but like a different person. Like every song to have an approach like that but each song, not a song that the next song would sound like the same person who played, you know what I mean?" - John Frusciante, about Californication
