Chapter Nine

Inside the flagship, Lotor had thrown his goblet against the viewscreen.

"Hagar! Why was your beast defeated?!?" he demanded.

Hagar was dumbfounded. She honestly thought that Voltron would be destroyed once and for all by her creation. She had put more magic into that one beast than she had in any others. She gritted her teeth.

"This Voltron Force is wily," she said to Lotor. "I did not expect them to show such...such..."

"Did you not think they knew how to fight?" Lotor yelled.

"Not this well."

"Let this be a lesson to you, Witch. Don't fail me again." He glared at the screen. "Get out of my sight."

Hagar vanished in a flash of light, leaving Lotor to sulk. The Lions had disassembled and were now tearing through his fighters. He sat up straight when he realized that they were losing, and badly. The Arusians were using all they have and when in the past they would have just been on even ground with the Doom forces, they now had the upper hand with the help of the Lions. Lotor stood.

"Retreat," he said.

"What was that sir?" the soldier nearest him asked.

"You heard me."

"Attention fighters..."

"Not them!" Lotor raged. "Just us. Let's get out of here. This is not going to turn out well."

The flagship fired one last blast that created a cloud of debris to cover their escape and they disappeared into the clouds. Sven noticed their escape and notified Keith.

"Should ve go after dem?" he asked.

Keith fired his lasers at a fighter. "We can't sacrifice the manpower to go after them. Focus on destroying these fighters. Obviously they've been abandoned."

"Keith!" Coran's voice came over the comm. "We are under attack. The ground forces can't hold them back."

"Pidge, Hunk," Keith said. "Clean that up."

The Yellow and Green Lion veered away from the battle. The Arusians had already retreated back into the compound so they were free to blow everything up without fear of hurting any of their own people. The Doom robots were eliminated within seconds.

"Nice job, Boys," Allura told them.

"Just make sure a big turkey will be waiting for me when we get back," Hunk said.

"Will do."

They went back to the fight, guns blazing. It went on for what seemed like days, but were only hours. In the end, Arus was victorious, but at the loss of more than a quarter of their fighters. They landed on the surface, and set foot on their land, their helmets under their arms and their expressions dazed. It was as if they couldn't believe that this was happening. Keith jumped down from the Black and headed towards a group of men. When he neared, he saw that most of them were crying. Lance, Sven, Pidge, and Hunk joined him, each of them wearing a big smile.

"Liberation," Keith heard one of them whisper.

In the distance, they saw another group nearing them, headed by a slender woman. The men ran to their families and the noise built up, as if the party they had been celebrating underground was now extended to the surface. Allura clutched her hands together as she watched her people happy at last. She had been in the main, coordinating their efforts as they fought on the surface. She had watched her men fall and felt a small part of her die each time they did. She knew they deserved this. They had waited so long to be saved. Coran stood by her side, an arm around her shoulders. Nanny stood on her other side, one of Allura's hands in her own. They faced the Voltron Force. Allura's eyes were suspiciously moist, but no tears fell. Instead, she smiled and it seemed to them that the sun had broken through the clouds at last.

"Thank you," she said simply.

"It was a piece of cake," Lance said.

"Speaking of cake..." Hunk said.

"Dere iz enof cake to feed you for a lifetime!" Nanny exclaimed.

"Somehow, I doubt that," Pidge said, patting Hunk's ample stomach. "But it's a nice try, Nanny."

Keith went to Allura's side, smiling. She sighed deeply as if a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders.

"He'll be back," she said.

"Who?"

"Lotor. His pride is as big as his fleet. He will not let us get away."

"No, but now we are going to fight back," Lance said. "You've got us now, Princess."

"Yes, I do."

"So, ven are we going to move up here?" Sven asked, his hands on his hips as he surveyed the black land.

"As soon as we redecorate," Allura said wryly. "That's going to take years, so I doubt we'll be moving anytime soon." She knelt and poked a finger into the hard ground. "There's no way we can survive up here. Zarkon drained all the resources. I'm surprised we can still breathe."

"I'll call GG," Pidge said.

"What are they going to do?" Allura asked.

Hunk grinned. "What you said. They're going to redecorate."

"They gave up on us a long time ago."

"It's your right, as part of the Alliance, to get the assistance needed to rebuild," Keith said determined. "I'm going to make sure of that."

"Ve are going to make sure of dat," Sven corrected.

"It helps when your father is an admiral," Lance said nonchalantly. "I'll see what I can do."

Keith looked around him. "It'll take years to get the whole planet back to what it was, but I think we'll be able to get the Castle of Lions back up within six months as well as some of the land around it."

The hope that had niggled at her when they found the Lion keys at last burst forth in her heart and Allura felt a small cry escape from her throat. Her hands flew to her mouth as tears began to fall from her eyes. The team looked shocked to see her crying, but Keith immediately enveloped her in his arms. She felt another pair go around her, and then another, and another, until she disappeared from view when they completely covered her.

"I always wanted to go back home," she said, laughing through her tears.
