"Dogs are our link to paradise.
They don't know evil or jealousy or discontent.
To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden,
where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace."
Milan Kundera

TEN THINGS
1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years.
Any separation from you will be painful for me.
Remember that before you buy me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me -- it's crucial for my well being.
4. Don't be angry at me for long and don't lock
me up as punishment. You have your work, your
entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.
5. Talk to me sometimes. Even though I don't
understand your words I understand your voice
when it's speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will not forget.
7. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth
that could easily crush the bones of your hand
but that I choose not to bite you.
8. Before you scold me, for being "uncooperative"
or "obstinate" or "lazy", ask yourself
if something might be bothering me.
Perhaps I am not getting the right food,
or I've been out in the sun too long,
or my heart is getting old and weak.
9. Take care of me when I get old;
you, too, will grow old.
10. Go with me on difficult journeys.
Never say "I can't bear to watch" or
"Let it happen in my absence".
Everything is easier for me if you are there.

DOG PEOPLE
- Are a special breed not usually recognized
by the CKC.
- Think everyone has crates in their living room.
- Have messy houses;
but their kennels are spotless.
- Can always find a show catalog from somewhere
within arm's reach.
- Have kids who know more about the "birds and the bees"
when they're five than most people now when they are 40.
- Drive trucks, vans, and station wagons
especially equipped to haul dog crates.
- Can never be reached on a weekend,
they're usually at a dog show.
- Will drive 400 miles, spend $100 on gas, $200 on a motel
and $150 for meals to bring home a 35 cent ribbon.
- Have kids who regard "bitch" as just another household word.
- Have lush, green, beautiful back yards
and they've never bought a bag of fertilizer.
- Get up at 6 AM to walk the dogs,
can be at ringside dressed to kill at 8 AM,
but have trouble getting to work on time.
- Will usually give up the $150,000 home in the suburbs
to move to a shack on 10 acres so they can have a $150,000 kennel.
- Never miss a closing date for entry fees;
but pay the mortgage 10 days late.
- Would rather be audited by the IRS
than investigated by the CKC.
- Use dog food bags for trash cans
and 30 gallon trash cans for dog food.
- Talk for hours on the phone to another dog person
in a language known only to dog people.
- Have parents (and friends) who think
they've lost their minds.
- Have dog friends who think
they are terrific................

Tears
If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand,
But don't let sorrow stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest
Your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so--
The time has come, please let me go.
Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end;
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know that in time you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve. It must be you
Who has this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

- Ben Williams

I AM NOT THERE
Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.
Mary Frye

No Matter how little money and how few possessions, you own,
having a dog makes you rich.
Louis Sabin

Dogs give their human companions unconditional love
and are always there with an encouraging wag of the tail when they are needed.
The dog is indeed a very special animal.

We derive immeasurable good, uncounted pleasures,
enormous security, and many critical lessons about life by owning dogs.

Poem for Dog Lovers
Hello. I've been expecting you for quite some time.
Here, come sit beside us for awhile .
and let me tell you about this old friend of mine.
She might look tattered or maybe old
But I won't say goodbye until you've been told.
She had the brightest eyes I had ever seen,
And wore a beautiful fur coat that would out shine a queen .
She was never prissy but walked with an aire ......
And oh so polite, you could take her most anywhere.
She could run like the wind and could catch anything she chased
But she protected and sat with me when I had problems to face.
You could not find a friend nearly so dear.
Because no matter the trouble she always stayed near...
She has never asked for much from me;
Just to love and respect her and I think you'll agree .
To give her a good meal plus a nice warm bed is not much to ask ;
When she has given me all her love and to her this was no task.
Now I understand you have a schedule to keep.
But I have a small favor before she nods off to sleep.
Please fold your wings around her and let her feel young while in no pain ;
Dear Guardian Angel of Pets ,
please keep her safe and happy until I see her again.

The great pleasure of a dog is that
you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold
you but he will make a fool of himself too.
Samuel Butler

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends
so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine,
and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old
are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing;
they each miss someone very special to them,
who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops
and looks into the distance.
His bright eyes are intent;
His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group,
flying over the green grass,
his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again
The happy kisses rain upon your face;
your hands again caress the beloved head,
and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet,
so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Your Pets In Heaven
To have loved and then said farewell, is better than to have never loved at all.
For all of the times that you have stooped and touched my head,
fed me my favorite treat and returned the love
that I so unconditionally gave to you.
For the care that you gave to me so unselfishly.
For all of these things I am grateful and thankful.
I ask that you not grieve for the loss, but rejoice in the fact that we lived,
loved and touched each others lives.
My life was fuller because you were there, not as a master/owner,
but as my FRIEND.
Today I am as I was in my youth.
The grass is always green, butterflies flit among the flowers
and the Sun shines gently down upon all of God's creatures.
I can run, jump, play and do all of the things that I did in my youth.
There is no sickness, no aching joints and no regrets and no aging.
We await the arrival of our lifelong companions
and know that togetherness is forever.
You live in our hearts as we do in yours.
Companions such as you are so rare and unique.
Don't hold the love that you have within yourself.
Give it to another like me and then I will live forever.
For love never really dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as we are.

Special Friend
I lost a special friend today
the kind you can't replace,
and looking at her empty bed
I still can see her face.
I see the endless energy
the sparkling puppy eyes,
Not the tired, fragile friend
I had to bid goodbye.
I know she's in a special place
our Lord has for such friends,
Where meadows, fields & flowers
help make them strong and whole again.
I remember how she'd run to me
to play her favorite puppy game,
And how her ears would perk right up
When she heard me call her name.
But as those precious years went by
And we both aged and grew,
I'd find her often slowing down
But-we had still so much to do.
Easter stands out in my mind
As she would always find the eggs,
The kids would have their baskets full
And she'd be there to beg.
Then there was the Christmas tree
with lots of candy canes,
As she devoured all she could
Surely, hoping it'd still look the same!
She did her guard dog duty well
Each time the doorbell rang,
Strangers surely couldn't see
My gentle friend--behind those fangs.
I've noticed in the recent times
Her ears were not as sharp,
Where is that running ball of fur
The years have shown their mark.
She started sleeping next to me
Was this her special clue,
Because she felt the end was near
I only wish I knew.
My Candy was a special dog
I know she gave her best,
But as I looked deep into her eyes I knew it was time, for her to rest.
It will truly be a struggle
I don't know how I'll face each day,
I have to let her go--I know
But in my heart she'll always stay.
This special place our Lord has made
Health and strength, wait for her there,
So with my very special friend
I'm sending all my prayers.
I know she's watching over me
She'll be with me when I cry,
So with one more kiss on her beloved head
I told my Candy Dog goodbye.

Rainbow Bridge: Sequel To The Original
Oh, when we get to Heaven We hope that we will find
The souls that once we loved Who left us all behind.
Some left us at the right time They left this world in peace
Others left too sudden Without the chance to say Goodbye,
They were gone before we had The chance to even cry.
There's a special place for grownups A special place for kids
Me? I'll be on the other side The side called Rainbow Bridge.
Across the dark green meadow A'top the hills I'll run
Where the colors from the rainbow Glitter from the sun.
And there I'll find my sweetheart Running fast toward me
In my arms where he belongs for all eternity.
Jean McColgan

A Dog's Prayer
Treat me kindly, my beloved master,
for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness
than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand
between the blows, your patience and understanding
will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music,
as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail
when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
When it is cold and wet, please take me inside...
for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements...
and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth...
though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow
than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land...
for you are my god... and I am your devoted worshiper.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water,
for although I should not reproach you were it dry,
I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food, that I may stay well,
to romp and play and do your bidding,
to walk by your side, and stand ready,
willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.
And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit
to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you.
Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands
grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest...
and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew,
my fate was ever safest in your hands.
Beth Norman Harris

REMEMBER ME
To My Loved Ones
When I'm gone, release me, let me go, you must.
I have so many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me in tears;
Be happy that we had so many years.
I gave you my love, you can only guess,
How much you gave me in happiness.
I thank-you for the love you each have shown.
But now it's time I travel on.
So grieve for me awhile, if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a while that we must part,
So bless the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away for life goes on,
So if you need me call and I will come.
Though you can't see or touch me I'll be near,
If you listen with your heart you will feel,
All my love around you soft and clear.
Then when it's your time to come this way alone,
I'll greet you with a smile and say,
........."Welcome Home."
