We all dream, whether we remember them or not. If you are like me, sometimes you remember an entire dream, sometimes you remember parts of a dream, and sometimes you remember your dreams in "sequence". The "sequence" dreams are really interesting. That is my personal terminology for two or more dreams that follow each other on the same night. For me - one dream often leads to another, and I quite often do not wake up totally between dreams.
We dream most vividly during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep periods, which occur approximately every ninety minutes. Not sleeping long enough to go into REM sleep can be one reason for inability to remember our dreams. Dreamtime is also where we "deal with" the events of our day. If on some level we are not ready to deal with specific events, we may dream about them, but we may not remember the dream.
Writing down (journaling) our dreams is a good way to remember them. Some people advocate trying to remember as much of your dream state as you can upon waking, and then writing it down. What works for me personally is to start writing down the dream as soon as I wake up - just allowing the ideas to flow, not centering on any one idea or trying to make sense of anything. Also, waking up naturally, rather than by alarm clock, is much more conducive to remembering ones dreams. Another tool to try is to tell yourself before you go to sleep that upon waking you will remember your dreams. Sounds silly - but it works!
Lucid dreaming is an especially interesting type of dreaming. You are "asleep", and you are dreaming, but you are also "aware" that you are dreaming! This is especially helpful when you are working with a repetitive (recurring) dream, where you can remember part but not all of the dream. Once you "recognize" that you are in the dream, you can control what happens, and you can identify things that were "blocked out" previously.
Interpreting your own dreams is a wide open field! There are symbols that are somewhat general for overall dreaming, but it is good to remember that symbols will vary greatly from culture to culture, and from person to person. Also - the events in our lives will have an effect on what we are dreaming, and why. Once you have written down your dream, it may be a good idea to just do a quick run through and see what different aspects of the dream mean to you. Write down your first response - you can go back later and write down anything else that come to you.
Recurring dreams need to have special attention paid to them. They represent subjects that the dreamer is focusing on (consciously or unconsciously) on a frequent basis, and can represent areas that need some type of resolution.
