PATRIOT GIRLS BLANK DOUGLAS BYRD
The Pilot, Appeared Friday, March 20th, 2009
Held to one goal in its first four matches, the Pinecrest girls battered the nets on Tuesday with a 10-0 victory at Douglas Byrd.
Half of the goals were scored by freshmen in the Patriots' conference opener that was called midway through the second half under the 10-goal rule. Antonia Meyers fashioned a hat-trick and fellow frosh Ally Parziale scored a pair of goals.
First-year coach Todd Abbey's squad takes a 2-3 record into Wednesday's 7 p.m. league game at home against Scotland County. The Scots are 4-2 overall (1-0 conference) after defeating Westover 10-0 on Tuesday behind four goals by Megan Brigman.
Brigman, who has scored over 140 goals in her Scot career, shared conference player of the year honors last season with the Patriots' Latanya Cain, now a freshman member of the soccer team at N.C. State. Earlier this month, Brigman was named the Mid-Southeastern Conference girls' basketball player of the year.
Other goal scorers for the Patriots on Tuesday were Kate Hieronymus (two), Michelle Lynch, Sarah Senior and Lauren Corrigan. Shannon Potter and Lyndsey Anderson shared the goalkeeping.
"It was good to get in front of the goal and put some in," Abbey said. "We got a lot of people in and I think the positive now is we're getting positive contributions from all 18 players."
Pinecrest is seeking its 12th conference title in a row this season. Scotland was the last team to share a title with the Patriots (2001).
