The Pinecrest girls' soccer team is looking forward to the start of conference play.
The Patriots (1-3) finished a rough early season schedule of four games in five days Wednesday with a 3-0 home loss to East Chapel Hill.
Mid-Southeastern Conference play is scheduled to begin next week.
Wednesday night the Wildcats scored two early goals to put pressure on the Patriots from the outset.
The Wildcats added a third nine minutes into the second half on a header after a Wildcat corner kick.
The Patriots battled back the remainder of the half, generating a few shots on goal, but no real quality scoring chances.
Defensively the Patriots clamped down on the Wildcats and were able to prevent any other quality scoring chances.
The Patriot players are learning a new system under interim first-year coach Todd Abbey, and with limited practice time, both players and coaches are adjusting.
"We've got to get better movement off the ball," said sophomore Kate Hieronymus. "We can learn from this loss but we've got to start playing what we see."
Abbey praised his team for playing hard and continuing to adapt to the new style of play.
"We have a very talented team, but we are still trying to find the right people in the right positions," Abbey said. "We have to get that feeling where we know we are going to win games."
The Patriots opened the season games against Wakefield and Terry Sanford on consecutive days. They defeated Cary on Monday before taking the field against highly-ranked East on Wednesday.
The Patriots are scheduled to play at conference foe Douglas Byrd Monday.
Pinecrest returns home Wednesday to host conference foe Scotland County.
