PATRIOTS ROMP PAST SCOTLAND WEDNESDAY
By Charlie Bergmann: Special to The Pilot, Appeared Friday, March 20th, 2009
The Pinecrest girls continued their goal-scoring binge this week, routing Scotland County 12-2 at John Williams Field, Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Lauren Corrigan scored three of her four goals in the first half as the Patriots jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Megan Brigman accounted for both Scot goals, giving her 19 on the season and 146 in her high school career.
Following up on Tuesday's 10-0 win over Douglas Byrd, the Patriots improved to 2-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 3-3 overall. The loss dropped the Scots to 1-1 and 4-3.
The Patriots were shut out in three of the first four games against stiff non-league competition. But first-year coach Todd Abbey is starting to see things come together under a new system for the team.
"Our overall goal is to try to get teams to chase," he said. "We've got the five midfielders we constantly play through that get it from side to side. That's our goal. Once you make teams chase, that gets them out of position a little bit. Tonight there were opportunities coming from everywhere."
Early on, it was Rachel Dokich crossing balls from the right and Lyndsey Anderson providing service from the left. Brigman had yet to touch the ball on the Patriot side of the pitch when Antonia Meyers scored the first goal in the 10th minute, finishing a rebound off a shot by Kate Hieronymous.
Sarah Senior made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute off another rebound. Corrigan scored three of the next four goals, the last coming on a penalty kick in the final minute of the half.
Meanwhile, defenders Mary Barkley and Bailey Pages controlled Brigman. Three times Pages and the Scot star engaged in fierce one-on-one battles in the Patriot end.
"We weren't really concerned about one player -- it was about the whole game and how we were going to work as a team," Pages said. "I like playing Scotland. They usually give us a good game. And I like going against Megan Brigman, advancing my skills and challenging myself."
In the second minute of the second half, Brigman broke the shutout after lofting a towering ball from about fifty yards away that took a high hop over Patriot goalkeeper Shannon Potter into the net.
The home team responded quickly with Pages and Senior each scoring their second goals of the match within the next three minutes.
Corrigan's fourth goal off cross from Dokich made it 10-1. With 15:18 remaining, Dokich fed Michelle Lynch for the score that ended the match under the 10-goal differential rule.
Corrigan could not remember ever scoring as many as four goals in a match.
"I had some perfect through-balls," she said. "Tonight we finally started talking and working together as a team putting passes together. That gave us a lot of opportunities which is why we won."
Others scoring goals for the Patriots were Anderson and first-half goalkeeper, Sarah Dejak. Dokich (2), Kate Hieronymous (2), Lynch (2), Pages and Beth Hieronymous were among those credited with assists. Next for Pinecrest is a date at Richmond Senior on Monday.
Scotland came into the match at less than full strength.
"You could tell Scotland had some injured players and they'll probably give us a much better game down there after spring break," Abbey said. "For our girls, mentally, it's good to get a game like this that they were concerned about."
Earlier in the evening, the Patriot jayvee team improved to 3-2 with a 7-0 victory over the Scots.
