CAIN GAINS PHS GOAL MARK
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, March 30th, 2007
"What a great two girls," Pinecrest soccer coach Larry Martin said about Latanya Cain and Jordan Howell after Wednesday's 7-0 victory over Seventy-First.
Four goals by Cain increased her season total to 18 and the number in her Patriot career to 96. In last week's 2-1 victory over Jack Britt, the junior broke the previous career mark of 89 goals set by Howell, who graduated in 2000.
The eighth-ranked in 4-A Patriots take a 9-0-1 record into tonight's 7 p.m. contest against fourth-ranked Leesville Road (9-1-1) at the Brittany III Girls' Soccer Showcase held in Wilson.
Howell went on to play college soccer at Western Carolina. She currently teaches and coaches at a private school near Atlanta.
"Both Jordan and Tanya are kids that when you look at them from any perspective," Martin said, "they've got a wonderful attitude, they're both good students, they're leaders on the team, and they add a lot of excitement and positive energy. Both of them have such a passion for the game."
Howell played under coach Lorna Martin, who stepped down last December as the only girls' soccer coach the program has ever had.
"Coach Martin (Lorna) enjoyed both of them," the current Patriot coach said. "The exciting thing is that Tanya is a junior and I get to enjoy her one more year."
Cain beat multiple defenders to score each of her goals against a stubborn Seventy-First squad that allowed only one goal in the last 49 minutes of the match. The other goal scorers were Kristen Anderson, Katie Letsinger and Kelly Guarente.
Lyndsey Anderson (two), Letsinger and Morgan Maples contributed assists. Morgan Saunders and Keely Harbour shared the goalkeeping in the team's fifth shutout of the season. The Patriots finished the first half of the Mid-Southeastern Conference season with a record of 7-0 while the Falcons dropped to 1-5 and 2-9.
Cain, who also holds the Patriot single-season goal record (45), never got to see Howell play, but said she has heard a lot of good things about her.
"We have a lot of good players and everybody can score from any position," Cain said of this year's team. "It's not all on my back. We're a team and that's what it's all about."
The Patriots are expected to go into a weekend that also includes a 2 p.m. game on Saturday against Burlington Williams (8-0-0), the second-ranked team in 3-A, without the services of two of their offensive weapons.
Forward Molly Lynch, who has scored 17 goals this season, has an injured ankle, and center-midfielder Amber Fernandez is suffering from a groin injury.
Leesville Road made a big jump in the rankings last week after defeating then-second-ranked Broughton 1-0.
"There's a lot of respect across the state for Broughton, so obviously any team that beats them brings something to the table," Martin said. "Especially with our injured players, we'll just go down there and see what we can do."
