PATRIOTS, MARTIN CRACK 200 MARK
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, April 5th, 2006
The details of the 200th girls’ soccer victory for Pinecrest and the coach who started the program will not go down as being particularly memorable.
Coach Lorna Martin’s Patriots defeated Douglas Byrd 8-0 at home on Monday night in a match that was called about 15 minutes into the second half because of the lightning that was flashing all around.
It took Latanya Cain only 11 minutes to record a hat trick, and seven of the goals were scored by the midway point of the half.
Martin remembers well a time when the shoe was on the other foot.
Her first team in 1992 went 2-9-1 with one of the wins coming by forfeit. She recalled losing one of the games 20-0, she thinks to Northwest Guilford. The Patriots played most of their games against teams from a conference that included Lee County and others from the Greensboro area.
The only victory on the field came in the last game by a 1-0 score.
“It was like we were the state champions,” she recalls feeling about the first win. “We’ve definitely come a long way. I know how it is to start a program and suffer.
“Tonight we played half of a game and it was too easy. But at the same time, I have papers to grade.”
Pinecrest improved to 7-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 10-3 overall with the victory. Tonight, they entertain second-place Scotland County (6-1-1, 7-1-2), beginning with the junior varsity contest at 5:30 p.m.
Cain opened Monday’s scoring by punishing the Eagles for a short goal kick in the second minute of the match. A few minutes later, Ann Fields connected with Kristen Anderson in the left flat. The junior carried the ball a short way before sticking it in the upper-right corner of the net.
Fields had a hand in the next two scores as well. She assisted on Cain’s second goal and after an Anderson cross, took a shot that was finished by Molly Lynch off the rebound, making it 4-0 in the 10th minute.
Byrd goalkeeper Kenna Martin was in the process of making 15 first-half saves, but the goals kept coming. Cain completed the hat trick with a score off a Brittney Dishner cross. Then Christina Consalvo made it 6-0 off of a pass from Lisa Hopkins near the end line. After Chantelle Soto’s solo effort in the 19th minute, Martin removed most of the starters.
A short time after Marissa Dotson scored off a cross from Lyndsey Anderson early in the second half, the officials called the match.
The loss dropped Byrd to 1-6-1 in the conference and 1-10-1 overall.
The victory moves Martin’s career record to 200 wins, 63 losses and 20 ties. The Patriots are pursuing a ninth consecutive conference title (shared with Scotland in 2001) and have won 64 league games in a row.
“It’s a legacy and it’s good to be a part of it,” said Fields, a four-year varsity player, who has been around for 69 of the victories.
