By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, April 7th, 2006
Lorna Martin received 200 red roses before Wednesday’s girls’ soccer match between Pinecrest and Scotland County.
The Pinecrest coach received 10 of the flowers from each of her players, commemorating Mon-day night’s 200th victory of her coaching career (an 8-0 victory over Douglas Byrd).
The Patriot players quickly went about making it a good night all-around for their coach, scoring two goals in the first 11 minutes on the way to a 6-2 victory over the second-place Scots.
Latanya Cain, Ann Fields and Molly Lynch scored two goals each as the Patriots improved to 8-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 11-3 overall. The loss dropped the Scots to 6-2-1 and 7-2-2.
Cain and Fields scored the two early goals. Another by Lynch in the 28th minute helped the home team take a 3-0 lead into the intermission.
After Lynch scored to make it 4-0 in the 47th minute, Megan Brigman and Carolyn Sexton connected, cutting the margin in half. The Patriots tacked on insurance tallies by Cain in the 73rd minute and Fields in the 77th.
Cain and teammate Brittney Dishner each contributed two assists. Katelyn Burwell and Morgan Saunders shared the goalkeeping for the Pats. In the preliminary contest, the Pinecrest jayvee team defeated Scotland 4-0.
In a battle between conference leaders, Pinecrest entertains Lumberton County (12-1-1) tonight at 7 p.m., preceded by a jayvee match at 5:30 p.m. The Pirates are the 13th-ranked team in 4-A in this week’s North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association poll. They share first place in the Two Rivers Conference with Terry Sanford.
