The Pinecrest girls' soccer team took sole possession of first place in the Mid-Southeastern Conference with a 5-0 victory at Jack Britt Wednesday evening. The visitors took command with three goals in the middle 10 minutes of the first half and then played ball control in the Buccaneer end of the field for almost all of the second half. Lauren Broderick led the Patriot attack with a goal in each half. The Patriots took a 7-0 overall, and 4-0 conference record into a non-conference match at South View on Thursday. On Monday, they travel to Westover for a 7 p.m. league contest. The Bucs fell to 6-2 and 3-1. A handball in the penalty area by a Buc defender on a shot by Katie Fields led to the first goal in the 16th minute of the match. Stacey Blanchard converted the penalty kick and the break initiated some of the best offensive play by the Patriots this season. In the 24th minute, Broderick received a ball from Ann Fields to her left and deposited a shot in the net from about 20 yards away. About a minute later, Katie Fields took a pass from Molly Lynch on the right side of the field and scored, making it 3-0. The only Buc shot of the game came a moment later. Freshman Casey Turner directed a free kick toward the right post of the Patriot goal from about 25 yards away, but goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell jumped and pushed the ball over the bar. Toward the end of the half, senior forward Anne Brannon took a ball on the sternum and left the game and did not return. Afterwards she said that she has seen a lot of progress by the team in recent games. "We've definitely gotten a lot better," she said. "We're working well together, passing the ball better and the chemistry is definitely there. We've got a lot of good starting players and our bench is deep. Everybody on the team is solid." For most of the second half, the home team successfully rotated its defense from side-to-side, as the Patriots patiently knocked the ball around on the ground in 10-yard increments. But in the 64th minute, Malorie Potts passed to Broderick, who found the net from about 18 yards away with a shot that deflected off the glove of the Buc goalkeeper. Five minutes later, Stephanie Carter completed the scoring by finishing the rebound of her own shot. Molly Hill took over the goalkeeping in the 58th minute and shared in the Patriots' fifth shutout of the season. After the game, Patriot coach Lorna Martin said that she thinks her 10-ranked team (NCSCA 4-A poll) is definitely clicking. "We've been talking about thinking two steps ahead," she said. "At the beginning of the season they would get the ball and freak out instead of knowing what they were going to do before they got the ball. Now they know where their teammates are going to be." The Patriot junior varsity moved to 5-0 with a 7-0 win over the Bucs. Scoring the goals were Kristin Anderson (two), Kristen Capasso (two), Bonnie Jonmoore, Kelsey Daoust and Andrea Pinchac. Contributing two assists each were Pinchac, Lauren Leslie and Taylor Craven. Kelly Guarente and Jonmoore shared the goaltending duties for the Patriots. <-Previous 3-22-04 at Hoke County (W, 13-0) 3-25-04 at South View (W, 4-1) Next-> |
