PHS SOCCER TEAM SURVIVES SOUTH VIEW

The undefeated Pinecrest girls' soccer team passed one of its toughest tests by defeating Two Rivers Conference co-leader South View 4-1 in Hope Mills Thursday night.
Lauren Broderick scored in the first minute of the second half, breaking a 1-1 tie, and then delivered a cross from about the same spot on the field in the 66th minute, leading to another goal. The Patriot defense led by sweeper Georgia Haas and goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell kept the Tigers, now 9-2-1, out of the net after the intermission.
The match was scoreless until the 33rd minute when the Patriots' Lora Smith lofted a free kick from the left across the penalty area to Anne Brannon who booted it into the net. But, with just two minutes left in the half, the Tigers' Heather Mitrisin penetrated the left side of the Patriot third and threaded a ball behind the defense past the far post to Ashleah Dingle, who blasted home the equalizer.
Pinecrest coach Lorna Martin said that she was concerned about her team's reaction to the first goal scored against it in five games.
"I was concerned because they were hanging their heads," Martin said of her squad, now 8-0 and ranked 10th in the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association poll. "I thought to myself, don't you start that. But they pulled out of it and did very well.
As the second half got underway, Broderick worked her way down the left side almost to the endline in the corner and delivered a hard cross on the ground. Somehow it found its way into the net for a 2-1 Patriot lead.
But Mitrisin and Dingle, who have combined for 23 goals this season, remained dangerous. In the 46th minute, Dingle got loose on the right and unloaded a shot from about 18 yards away that looked like it would nestle inside the far post. Burwell went airborne to grab it. In the 60th minute she left her feet again to push a near post shot by Patricia Acosta wide.
"On the kick from Dingle, I didn't think I was going to be able to hold on to it, but I was glad I did," she said after the game. "I should have held on to the other one."
About five minutes later, Broderick made another beeline for the left corner and drove a low ball across the goalmouth. Freshman Molly Lynch timed her middle run perfectly and put it in the net for a 3-1 lead.
Martin said that Broderick's move to the corner was a subject of discussion at a recent practice.
"It was really funny because we did a drill where they kept cutting it outside," the coach said. "I asked why are you taking it outside instead of in, because you can't score from the end line. Somebody said, 'Broderick can.' She scored that way against Terry Sanford."
The Patriots completed the scoring with three minutes left in the match when Ann Fields took a pass from Malorie Potts and kicked the ball high in the net from the right side.
Even so, things might have been different had it not been for the two saves by Burwell and the work of Haas and the other Patriot defenders, Smith, DeAnna Jackson and Stacey Blanchard.
Monday's 7 p.m. away game on the schedule at Westover has been changed to a home game. However, Martin says that there has been talk about playing it at home on Tuesday. The school should have the latest information by Monday.
