PINECREST GOES OVERTIME TO DEFEAT TERRY SANFORD
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, March 12, 2004
A stunning goal by Lauren Broderick off the kickoff for the second overtime sent Pinecrest on to a 4-2 victory at Terry Sanford Wednesday night in a battle of two of the region's top teams.
In a sequence that took just 11 seconds, Anne Brannon recieved the first pass after the kickoff and chipped a ball over the defense to Broderick. The junior unloaded a shot from about 25 yards out that landed high in the net for her second goal of the night.
About five minutes later, Ann Fields turned a long throw-in from Lora Smith and left-footed the ball into the net for the clincher.
"This is probably going to be on of the biggest games of our season," Patriot coach Lorna Martin said after the game. "All of our goals were quality goals tonight."
The Patriots, now 2-0, lost last year's opener to the Bulldogs 3-2 with Rachel Yepez, who went on to score 35 goals and earn all-state honors as a freshman, scoring twice. This year, in an evenly played first half, she scooped up a ball that got away from Patriot goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell and put it in the net for the 1-0 Bulldog lead in the 17th minute.
Eight minutes later, Broderick ran down an over-cooked corner kick and knotted things up with a shot that looked like it came from near the end line to the right of the Bulldog goal. She was asked if she was intending to cross the ball.
"It was kind of a little bit of both," she said later while smiling. "It just came out of nowhere I guess. I'll say it was a shot just for the heck of it."
The Bulldogs, now 4-1, immediately challenged again with Jastin Windell heading a Yepez cross just wide of the goal and a minute later Yepez launching another long ball from the left side that rattled off the top bar of the goal. But tied at 1-1 going into the second half, the Patriots kept the Bulldog sophomore quiet the rest of the way.
Junior defender Lora Smith talked about the defensive strategy that limited the Bulldogs to 11 shots overall to 22 for the Pats.
"Coach Martin and Coach Quevas (assistant coach Hector) just told us not to mark up specifically on that one person," she said. "They wanted us to just pick up the open player because they're all dangerous, not just one."
Six minutes into the second half, Broderick crossed a ball from the left to Brannon on the near edge of the Bulldog penalty area. The senior flicked the ball with her first touch over goalkeeper Leigh Whaley into the net for the 2-1 Patriot lead.
Two minutes later, the Bulldogs' Alyssa Ploeger beat the Patriot defense to a loose ball in front of the goal and connected for the equalizer.
The best chances to break the tie came from the Patriot attack. With about 17 minutes left in regulation, Broderick came all the way back to the Bulldog third to strip Yepez and sent a ball up the line to Katie Fields. Fields carried the ball before crossing it on the ground toward Ann Fields, but Whaley got there just in time. In the final two minutes, Brannon twice attacked from the right shooting high both times.
Smith said that the Patriot coaches have the team running a lot and that the team's fitness might have been the difference.
"I think we just kind of wanted it more because we lost to them last year," she said. "We were ready. We wanted to win."
Other Patriot defenders playing major roles in turning away the home team were Allison Auman, Georgia Haas, Stacey Blanchard and Mollyrose Milewski. Burwell recorded three saves and Whaley nine.
In the first game of the evening, the Pinecrest junior varsity opened its season with a 4-0 victory. Bonnie Jonmoore and Kristin Anderson scored the Patriot goals. Andrea Pinchac had the assist on Anderson's goal. The defense only allowed five shots on goal. Marissa Dotson, Sarah Stewart, Jenny Rocque and Kristen Capasso led the defensive effort, while Kelly Gaurente and Kelsey Daoust manned the goal.
Monday night the Patriots open Mid-Southeastern Conference play with a 7 p.m. contest at Scotland County (3-2). The junior varsity squads play at 5:30 p.m.
