The Pinecrest girls' soccer team broke open a close match with four goals in a period of four minutes in the second half to take home a 6-0 season-opening victory at Lee County Monday night. Sophomore Katie Fields turned in a hat trick and junior Lora Smith contributed two assists to lead the winners. Goalkeepers Katelyn Burwell and Molly Hill were called on for just a save apiece as the Patriots took 20 shots to two for the Jackets. In spite of six first-half corner kicks, the Patriots were unable to score until Lauren Broderick took a pass from Smith and tucked a shot on the ground into the right corner of the net in the 33rd minute. "We didn't capitalize on the coner kicks very well," Pinecrest coach Lorna Martin said. "Anne Brannon and Sara Cole were putting them in the right place, but we just weren't making the runs to get there. We had 11 people playing good individual soccer, but they weren't working together. It might have been partly nerves and partly getting used to some new players." In the first minute of the second half, Fields beat the Jacket goalkeeper to a deflected ball and put it in the net for the 2-0 lead. "It was sheer tenacity on her part," Martin said of the hustle play by Fields. "She wanted the goal badly. I breathed a sigh of relief." Things stayed relatively quiet until the outburst of scoring that began in the 68th minute. Megan Cole followed a shot by Fields into the goal making it 3-0. A minute later, Fields connected off a chip from Stephanie Carter. Then Fields took a long ball from Smith and broke free for goal number three and Marlorie Potts finished a cross from Megan Cole to complete the scoring in the 72nd minute. "We have a lot of very fast people, especially in the forward positions," Martin said. "I think we kind of wore them down. We were able to take a look at a lot of new players tonight. It looks like there is a lot of potential." The Patriots are idle until they travel to Terry Sanford for another non-conference match on Wednesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. There is a junior varsity contest between the teams starting at 5 p.m. 3-10-04 at Terry Sanford (W, 4-2) Next>> |
