PATRIOTS PULL OVERTIME TO BEAT SCOTS
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, March 17th, 2004
Pinecrest soccer player Allison Auman described her Patriots as a second-half team following a 3-1 victory at Scotland County Monday night.
It might be more accurate to describe the tight-rope walking Patriots as an overtime team after taking that route for the second match in a row.
The Patriots, now 3-0, got overtime goals from Ann Fields and Katie Fields to turn away a game Scot squad that had taken a 1-0 lead with 14 minutes left in regulation in the Mid-Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.
Auman, who started the game as an outside defender, was moved to the center midfield spot late in regulation and assited on the goal by Katie Fields. Even though the Patriots hadn't lost a conference match since a 1-0 loss to the Scots in March of 2002, she said that she did not feel they took their opponent lightly.
"I think it was kind of a Monday game thing," the junior said." It just took us awhile to get into the flow and connect with our passes. Maybe we weren't pumped up for the whole conference thing. We're a second-half team unfortunatley.
The Patriots have scored 11 of their 13 goals this season in the second half or overtime. Last Thursday, they scored twice in the second overtime to defeat Terry Sanford 4-2.
They followed that form Monday in a scoreless first half that saw them take a dozen shots to none for the home team. Broderick made five of those attempts, but the best chance belonged to midfilder DeAnna Jackson who intercepted a weak clearance just above the Scot penalty area and missed an open goal by a couple of feet to the left.
The Scot's Kate Edwards took the home team's first shot in the opening seconds of the second half. The Pats continued to pad their shot total, but the hardest hit of the night came in the 66th minute when Edwards unloaded a direct kick from 25 yards away to the right of the goal. Patriot goal keeper Katelyn Burwell had to go high and parry the ball over the bar giving the Scots a corner kick. The scoreless tie was about to be broken.
Edward's line drive corner kick from the left side fell into a crowd about eight feet in front of the goal. The first player to get a solid foot on the ball was the Scots' Paige Gates and she put it in the net.
But the Patriots proved once again the old adage that one of the most dangerous times for a defensive team is just after a score of their own. In the 68th minute, Ann Fields worked her way down the right side and drove a low ball across the penalty area. It nicked a couple of players before Sara Cole ran onto it and kicked it high into the net tying the match at 1-1.
"They were attacking us and they're a deeper team," said Scot coach Colin McDavid, who has only one year-round player on his squad (Edwards) to about 20 for the Patriots. "We don't have the total talent Pinecrest has. That lack of experience showed when they got the equalizer so quickly."
The Scots survived a seige on their goal that lasted until the end of regulation. But in the seventh minute of the first overtime, the Patriots switched the attack. Lauren Broderick received the ball from the left wing and got it to Ann Fields racing down the right side. Fields drilled a shot past the Scot goalkeeper inside the far post making it 2-1.
The Scots spent most of the second overtime in the Patriot half. With three minutes left, Edwards won a ball at midfield and took it alone. Her shot from about 15 yards away sent wide by a couple of feet. In the last minute, another Patriot cross, this one by Auman, was finished by Katie Fields, completing the scoring.
Patriot coach Lorna Martin said that her team came in knowing that the Scots, now 4-3, had played a couple of tough games against South View and Lumberton.
"They weren't a team to be taken lightly," she said. "We shouldn't have had to go to overtime against them - we had what 40 shots? I kept thinking that when we get the first goal, we'll get going."
The Patriots took 38 shots to six for the Scots. Katelyn Burwell went all the way in the net for the Patriots, recording two saves. The Pinecrest jayvee team improved to 2-0 with a 10-0 victory in the first game of the night.
Tonight's scheduled game at home against Richmond County (3-2, 1-0 conference) has been changed to a 7 p.m. away game because of work being done on the track at Pinecrest.
