The Pinecrest boys' soccer team remained unbeaten in Mid-Southeastern Conference play in clipping the Falcons of Seventy-First High School Wednesday night 7-2 at the John Williams Athletic Complex. Pinecrest improved its overall record to 11-1-0 and conference record to 6-0. The Patriots would have some difficulty breaking down the pesky 71st defense as the first 20 minutes passed scoreless. A hand-ball infraction in the penalty box against 71st finally brought Russell Stewart to the 12-yard stripe, where he converted for the 1-0 Pinecrest lead. The Patriots would quickly extend the lead to 2-0, as Stewart scored from close range off a feed from Matt Sessoms at the 23-minute mark. Just two minutes later, Sessoms would take the ball from near mid-field, dribble past the 71st defense and tuck the ball past the keeper for a 3-0 advantage. Patriot coach Larry Martin would then substitute the entire first team, resting players for Thursday's away match against formidable Terry Sanford of Fayetteville. Brazilian exchange student Murilo Viveiros would greet the visitors, tacking on the Pinecrest fourth goal with a shot from 18 yards away. The first half ended 4-1, with the Patriots providing the Bulldogs their point on an own goal with two minutes to play. Pinecrest again started slowly in the second half, 15 minutes elapsing before Glenn Holmes extended the lead to 5-1 on a nice solo effort, pressuring the 71st defense and sliding to tuck a shot past the unexpecting keeper. Freshman Max Brenner, in his first varsity action, would score via penalty kick as he was fouled en route to a goal at 70 minutes. Coby Kavanaugh would score the final Pinecrest goal two minutes later, as a scramble following a corner kick found him and the ball alone with the netminder with Kavanaugh poking it past for the Patriots' 7-1 lead. A late goal from 71st would make the final 7-2. <-Previous 9-25-06 vs Westover (W, 16-0) 9-28-06 at Terry Sanford (T, 1-1) Next-> |
