PATS STOP BUCS IN SOCCER
By Dean Parziale, Special to The Pilot, Appeared Friday, September 22nd, 2006
The Pinecrest boys' soccer team traveled to Fayetteville Wednesday for a Mid-Southeastern Conference showdown against the Buccaneers of Jack Britt High School.
The Patriots started slowly before recording six second-half goals on the way to a 6-0 win. Pinecrest improved to 4-0 in the conference and 9-1-0 overall. It was the first conference loss of the season for the Bucs.
In the first half, both teams spent 40 minutes going up and down the field without either team gaining a clear advantage. Pinecrest goalkeeper Glenn Holmes was tested almost immediately as he stopped a Buccaneer strike from 20 yards. The best chance for the Patriots would come 10 minutes in when a corner kick by Brandon Zoellner bounced around the goal mouth. Tyler Dawson would get a head on it only to have the ball cleared by a defender just as it was about to cross the goal line.
The fitness, conditioning and discipline of coach Larry Martin's Patriots appeared to play a role in the second half. As the final 40 minutes progressed, Pinecrest found its stride in knocking in six goals, while keeping the Bucs scoreless.
In the 45th minute, Russell Stewart swung a long ball in front of the goal that Matt Sessoms headed towards the net. The Buc keeper could not hang onto it, and a streaking Zoellner launched himself toward the loose ball, carrying himself and the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Jack Britt was whistled for offsides four times in the next two minutes, frustrating the home strikers.
Stewart recorded the second Pinecrest goal at 49 minutes, as a ball misplayed by the Buc defense found him alone against the keeper. He poked the ball home, giving Pinecrest a 2-0 lead.
Four minutes later, a long throw-in by Sessoms turned into a goal mouth scrum that ended with Zoellner depositing the ball into net, making it 3-0. Play turned decidedly more physical with a number of yellow cards being issued. A penalty kick was awarded to Pinecrest after Zoellner was fouled en-route to goal. Stewart converted the PK for a 4-0 advantage.
Murilo Viveiros would score directly from a set piece 25 yards out at the 78-minute mark, while Michael Hieronymus would finish the scoring a minute later with a bomb from 25 yards.
The Pinecrest defense played a solid game. Defenders Jim Hobbs, wearing a knee brace after suffering an injury in Monday's game with Hoke, Silas Cole, Glenn Holmes and Charlie Davis all helping to preserve the Patriot shutout.
The Pinecrest junior varsity team defeated the Jack Britt jayvees by a margin of 4-0. The Patriots got two goals each from Ryan Ostermann and Max Brenner.
Patriots' Matt Scott and Dana Parziale split time in goal, combining to record the shutout.
