PATRIOTS HOLD OFF BUCS IN LEAGUE SOCCER ACTION

The Pinecrest boys' soccer team improved its record to 8-1-0 Monday night as it defeated the visiting Hoke County Bucks 4-0 at the John Williams Athletic Center. The victory came at a cost, however, as three of the home team starting 11 either limped or were carried from the field. The depleted Pinecrest side will travel to face tough conference-foe Jack Britt tonight in Fayetteville.
The Bucks proved to be a tough nut to crack for the home side as the first 37 minutes passed without any scoring.
Pinecrest controlled the play and had decent goal-scoring chances, but could not find space as the Bucs packed the defensive end with seven or eight players, leaving only two speedy strikers to challenge the Pinecrest defense.
Twice the Bucks attackers would break clear for goal attempts that Pinecrest keeper Glenn Holmes would stuff. Pinecrest would finally break through with three minutes to play in the first half, as Thomas Goulden played a beautiful cross from the left wing that Matt Sessoms would finish via header at the six-yard line.
The half was marred as Jim Hobbs, a senior Patriot defender, would go down with injury from knee-to-knee contact, and was assisted from the pitch.
Hoke appeared to be out of gas in the second half, while Pinecrest found its scoring touch.
Five minutes in, Goulden again struck a long cross that Karl Ainslie flicked to a waiting Tyler Dawson, who smartly finished for 2-0 Pinecrest advantage.
A minute later, Russell Stewart would just miss with a hard strike from 20 yards, although he would not have to wait long for another chance.
At the 49-minute mark, Coby Kavanaugh hustled past the Hoke defense only to be fouled in the penalty area. Stewart would convert the PK for a 3-0 Pinecrest lead.
The Pinecrest bench was now looking like an infirmary as Kavanaugh, Hobbs and Ainslie, who tweaked an ankle, sat in discomfort.
The Pinecrest substitutes did admirable work the last 30 minutes led by Murilo Viveiros, Dawson and Michael Heironymus.
Sessoms would finish the scoring for Pinecrest on a nice feed from Stewart that Sessoms ran onto before outdistancing the Hoke defense to beat the keeper at the far post for the 4-0 final.
The Pinecrest junior varsity team impressed with a 7-0 lashing of the Hoke County jayvees.
Decker Platt netted three goals, with single tallies coming from Ryan Ostermann, Dylan Cole, Aaron Stroker and John Kropp.
Matt Scott and Dana Parziale split the net-minding chores for Pinecrest.
