By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, October 22nd, 2003
The Pinecrest boys' soccer team shook off the dissappointment of giving up its first goal in 11 conference matches this season and went on to drub second place Jack Britt 10-2 in Fayetteville Monday night.
Nine different players scored goals for the Patriots led by Jon Gribben with a pair to go with an assist. Scott Martin, Gabe Bruno, and Ivan Andrade each scored a goal and contributed two assists.
With a chance to gain a tie for first place, the Bucs now 8-2 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 12-5 overall, took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute on a breakaway goal by Shawntez Zanders.
The Patriots answered in the 15th minute when a touch off of a corner kick by Mike Hinerth was volleyed into the net by Erik Haywroth. Goals by Martin off an assist by David Jannone and another by Gribben assisted by Martin gave the visitors a 3-1 halftime lead.
Coach Larry Martin of the 11-0 and 13-5-2 Patriots said that he tried to prepare his team pyshcologically for the time when they would be scored upon.
"I talked to them a couple of times about being ready to shake it off in the event of a goal and to get back into the game," he said. "I think they did a good job of that. That's the second best team in the conference and they got two goals. But we got 10. I still think it's a pretty impressive result."
The second Buc goal came on a penalty kick by Eric Proctor with the score 9-1. The collision that led to the call resulted in Patriot goalkeeper Jonathan Shute having to leave the game with a possible concussion.
Wednesday, Pinecrest is home against Westover in a 7 p.m. start. It will be another Sandhills Youth Soccer League Night with players wearing their game jerseys getting in free.
In Monday's junior varsity contest, Pinecrest (15-2-1) defeated Jack Britt 5-1. Andy Taglierini, Tommy Ransdell, Omar Abusamra, Marco Gironda and G.R. Horton scored the Patriot goals. Gironda, Abusamra and Logan Creque contributed assists.
