PATRIOTS STAY UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE SOCCER
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, October 15th, 2003
The Pinecrest boys' soccer team was obviously a bunch of athletes feeling good about themselves before, during and after a 7-0 victory at Richmond County Monday night.
With Patriot coach Larry Martin altering the starting lineup of his deep squad game by game, all five of the teams' underclassmen got a starting nod and contributed to a 5-0 first-half lead.
Although the underclassment contributed to the win it was the seniors on the team that did all of the scoring.
Gabe Bruno and David Jannone scoring twice and Jon Gribben, Ivan Andrade and Andrew Boulton picking up one apiece.
"I think everybody is enjoying themselves," Martin said following the match. "We just have to stay focused. We are at that time of year where people are getting to play and everybody's contributing. And we're finding out who can do what."
The Patriots moved to 9-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 11-5-2 overall with the win, while the Raiders dropped to 4-4 and 5-6.
The team travels to Hoke County for a 7 p.m. contest tonight before puttng a share of first place on the line at Jack Britt, 7-1 and 11-4, next Monday.
The Bucs kept their title hopes alive with a 4-3 overtime victory over Seventy-First also on Monday.
On a night of spectacular goals, the scoring began in the sixth minute with sweeper Michael White beating the home team in transition with a pass to David Jannone, who found Bruno open inside the penalty area to the left of the goal. Blocked one way, the senior made a turn and blasted the ball into the net from about 10 yards away.
Eight minutes later, freshman defender Casey Wylie started things with a pass down the right side to Joe Johnson.
The junior's low cross into the penalty area was first timed into the net by the charging Jannone.
At the midway point of the half, Gribben found the top of the net with a laser shot on a direct kick from about 24 yards out. Forward Ivan Andrade made it 4-0, banging home on his first touch an attempted clearance by Raider goalkeeper Zach Green that somehow got in his path.
The crowd pleaser for Patriot fans came with three minutes left in the half.
Substitute goalkeeper Christian Garcia first stopped a hard shot by Andrade, then also the rebound attempt at close range by Boulton, only to have Boulton blast home the next carom.
Bruno, who put away a loose ball in front of the goal for his second tally midway through the second half, began the match at forward instead of his outside midfield position.
He said that he got pumped up for the game listening to music with Gribben on the bus.
"I haven't played much forward in a while, but I tried to show for the ball as much as I could and give other chances," he said. "It just happened that I got one."
Gribben said that since the team's 7-0 win at home against Jack Britt, the team has been coming together after going 2-5-2 in the course of a tough pre-conference schedule.
"After that game, we all kind of looked up and said wow, we can really do something this year," he said. "After those losses at the beginning of the year, we had our heads down for a long time. We didn't play anybody we couldn't beat."
Jannone scored his second, and the final goal, of the match on a penalty kick.
Rashad Gatling and Jonathan Shute had an easy night in goal for the Patriots, as the Raiders mustered just one shot to 38 for the Patriots.
The shutout was the 11th of the season and 14th in a row in the conference going back to last season.
The Pinecrest junior varsity improved to 13-2-1 with a 6-0 victory over the Raiders.
