By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, October 10th, 2003
The Pinecrest boys' soccer team opened the second half of Mid-Southeastern Conference play with a 5-0 home victory over Scotland County Wednesday evening.
The Patriot's eighth straight shutout victory in league action came on a rainy Sandhills Youth Soccer League Night. The defensive-minded Scots kept thing close until the Patriots broke through for four goals in the final 22 minutes of the match.
The Patriots best chance to score in a scoreless first half in which it took 17 shots to one for the visitors came with only 15 seconds left until the intermission. Jon Gribben rocketed a shot off of the goalpost and Scott Martin first-timed the rebound back to Scot goalkeeper Daniel Pruitte.
Four minutes into the second half, Patriot defender Michael White carried the ball into the Scot half and passed it down the right side to teammate Gabe Bruno.
The outside midfielder sent a low cross through the Scot penalty area to his counterpart on the other side, Dustin Burns. Burns connected solidly on the run with his first touch, beating Pruitte for the 1-0 lead.
At the 58-minute mark, it was Bruno who made the scoring pass again. This time it was Neil Perez on the receiving end. The center midfielder took possession around the top of the penalty circle, beat a defender, and tucked a shot on the ground inside the far post just out of the reach of Pruitte.
Goals three, four and five came within a six-minute span, beginning with a penetration of the penalty area and scoring strike by Mario Stratta in the 71st minute.
Martin and Gribben closed out the scoring with unassisted goals.
Jonathan Shute and Rashad Gatling shared the goalkeeping for Pinecrest in its 10th shutout overall of the season.
The Patriots will take a 10-5-2 overall and 8-0 conference record into the next match at Richmond County on Monday. The junior varsity game begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.
Pruitte recorded 12 saves in goal as Scotland dropped to 6-7 and 4-4.
The Pinecrest junior varsity imrpoved to 12-2-1 with a 13-1 victory over Scotland.
