PATRIOTS STORM PAST TROJANS
IN NON-CONFERENCE SOCCER
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, September 5th, 2003
The Pinecrest boys' soccer team erupted for five goals in each half to break a three-match losing streak at Pine Forest Wednesday night.
The Patriots, 2-3-1, more than doubled their goal output for the young season against the Trojans, now 2-3-0.
The junior varsity match was a carbon copy of the varsity contest with the Patriots delivering an 11-0 rout over the Trojans.
Dustin Burns and David Jannone led the Patriots attack with two goals apiece, Scott Martin and Jonathan Gribben were each credited with two assists. Jonathan Shute and Rashad Gatling shared the team's second shutout of the season. The Trojans allowed two own goals.
It took the visitors only three minutes to get into the scoring column. Patriot coach Larry Martin said that he liked the way his team made use of the 70-yard wide field at Pine Forest's soccer only field.
"We were able to spread out and get a lot of good crosses for finishing," he said. "Sometimes a lopsided game is ugly. There were some good combination plays. I thought there was a lot of attactive play that took place."
In the jayvee match, Marco Gironda and Tommy Ransdell led a tag team assault that produced 10 goals with Gironda getting six and Ransdell recording four.
Chris Melone notched his first goal of the season with a chip shot from 10 yards out to round out the Patriot total.
Credit for assists went to Guion Pratt (two), Daniel Johnson, Logan Creque and Ransdell.
The jayvee record stands at 4-1-1.
Pinecrest returned home to play Fayetteville Academy on Thursday. In a marquee matchup, the Patriots entertain Raleigh Millbrook on Monday at 6:30 p.m. following the junior varsity match at 4:30.
