PATRIOTS, EAGLES TIE IN SOCCER
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Sunday, September 9th, 2003
A couple of defensive lapses in the last three minutes of the first half allowed Fayetteville Academy to eke out a 2-2 tie against Pinecrest in boys' soccer action at John Williams Field Thursday night.
Trailing 2-1, Patriots defender Michael White evened things up with a goal four minutes into the second half. The home team spent much of the remainder of the game in the attacking end, but was turned away each time by the Eagles.
Pinecrest takes a 2-3-2 record into Monday's home contest against Raleigh Millbrook, the 2002 4-A state runner-up. Millbrook finished 22-2, losing 2-1 in overtime to Mount Tabor in the title game. The junior varsity game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity at 6:30 p.m.
Dustin Burns gave Pinecrest a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of the match when he recieved a ball from David Jannone and found net from about 10 yards out to the left of the goal.
With the first half winding down, a corner kick and a minute later a free kick, both coming from the right side, gave the Eagles opportunities to tee off from directly in front of the Patriot goal.
Sal Blair converted the first opportunity with Allen Staten getting credit for the assist. Then, Geoff Edmunds put away a weak clearance by a Pinecrest defender off a free kick by John Jenkins giving the Eagles the 2-1 lead.
On a night in which much of the dangerous attacking by Pinecrest came on long balls and sojourns by players from the back, White began his march toward the Eagles' goal from midfield. The sophomore beat a defender at the outset and carried the ball down the left side. From about 35 yards away, he cut inside and unloaded a shot on the ground from 23 yards away that found the left corner of the net.
Pinecrest's next best chance in a half in which it took 10 shots to two for the visitors came in the 60th minute. White started things by sending a ball deep into the Eagle end that forward Scott Martin received and chested back to Jonathan Gribben. The Patriot first-timed a shot that whitsled a foot or two by the right post of the goal.
About a minute later, the Patriots suffered their only anxious moment of the half when Blair burst free of the last defender. Goalkeeper Rashad Gatling came out and forced a shot that was just wide of the goal.
In the frustrating closing minutes for the Patriots, an apparent hand ball in the penalty area that was not called an an advantage taken away by a referee's whistle on a breakaway by Burns helped sew up the draw.
This was the first meeting between the schools since the Patriots lost 3-1 in the finals of the Eagles' own tournament in September of 2000. A game scheduled for last year was cancelled.
"It was a good game to watch, very enjoyable," McCarthy said. "We need to keep the rivalry going. We're only 45 minutes down the road."
Pinecrest outshot Fayetteville 20 to seven.
