Featured Poet for the month of September on CoffeeShopPoetics is Ligea. She was born Pittsburg, PA and is 29 years old. She currently resides in Boulder, CO working at the National Center for Atmospheric Research as Administrative Assistant/Web Developer, going to college part time for Computer Information Systems Degree. Her favorite poet/writer is Edgar Allen Poe. Besides the fact that it was his ' Ligeia' that inspired her father to name her, she has always identified with his writing, and considers it beautiful and complicated and morose- something she strives for in her own personal poetry.
She began writing often in high school but hadnt really written anything since 1994. A friend of hers (who is also a writer) inspired her to write again about a month ago. She had never shared her poetry with anyone until posting on CoffeeShopPoetics. She was afraid it wouldn't be received well. But her friend also told her that 'Poetry written and never shared is like a bug born in winter, dying before it once flaps its wings.' After taking this chance she was amazed at the feedback. She hasnt thought much of being published til another friend convinced her to submit one of her poems to a national contest (*winks*).
I would like to personally wish Ligea success with her writing, I find it very moving and insightful. I am proud to have her featured on this site and hopes she continues to write and not let that creativity go to waste.
I would also like to add that the nominations I have received during the past month are going to be held over into next month also for consideration of Featured Poet for October. I would like to thank all those who submitted nominations and encourage others to nominate themselves if they feel they are good writers/poets :-p.
Featured Poet of the month for October '99 -Justin Thomson
Featured Poet for the month of October on CoffeeShopPoetics is Justin Thomson.
He is from Kamloops BC Canada, 20 years old, and started writing when
he was 17. Mostly writing in school. He wrote the boatman when he was
17.
His poems tend to have two sides. One side is like a story that he tells through his poetry. The other side are his feelings, that are vented up over time and released in his writing. As with most poets he likes to read others writing, they offer inspiration. He also draws inspiration from artwork and music.
Many of the people who have visited the site have either emailed me about certain poets or nominated them after reading their writing. During the last month I have received several emails and nominations for Justin, so the choice of making him featured poet for this month was easy. He has a great style, and simple uniqueness that isnt cliche'. I would personally like to wish Justin great success with his writing if he ever decides to take them more public, as in books *which I think he should do*. Good luck Justin, and may the words continue to flow freely.
Featured Poet for the month of November on CoffeeShopPoetics is Jason Herman.
He is from Grand Island, New York, and currently attending Virgina Tech as a sophmore. He recently started writing poetry this year, after writing mostly fantasy stories. He finds writing poetry as something easier and somewhat faster than fantasy stories, and usually writes them during heightened times of emotion.
He's never been published but wouldn't mind the honor.
As an added side note, many of you choose him as the featured poet of the month at an overwhelming rate. Thanks for all the votes and I agree he is a great poet and I wish you success Jason :-).
