BENJAMIN THOMAS

Born ca. 1830, Benjamin is the tenth child of Annanias and Sarah Ross Thomas. Dated 13 Dec 1857, he married to Eliza Jane Nance. In the Oct 1858 term of the Union County Pleas and Quarters, Benjamin Thomas and his wife Eliza Jane received nine acres, known as Lot #6. This was to be Eliza Jane's share of the estate of John Austin, her Grandfather.

Enlisting in CSA Co. E., 48 Reg. NC, Benjamin Thomas died 11 Nov 1862 at Leesburg, VA. Dated 9 Aug 1864, Edmond Davis, the executor of the estate of Annanias Thomas, Sr. sold 80 acres of the estate to the heirs of Benjamin Thomas. Situated on Richardson's Creek, Benjamin had made improvements to the land that adjoined that of Jesse Gurley.

Following Benjamin's death, Eliza Jane married on 4 May 1874 to James Ramsey b. 1855. He is the son of John and Temperance Ramsey.

A. George W. Thomas b. 17 Aug 1859, d. 1 Aug 1931 bur. Olive Branch Baptist Ch, married on 14 Nov 1880 to Mary M. Nance b. 21 Jan 1863 d. Jun 1956. Mary is a daughter of James and Sarah Nance. George W. Thomas is a grandson of John A. Nance.

B. Elizabeth Ann Thomas b. 23 Jul 1860 d. 5 Oct 1934 bur Pleasant Hill Bapt. She married first on 14 Mar 1881 Amos Thomas, who is the son of Benjamin and Belinda Maness Thomas. This Benjamin is the son of Jacob, who is the brother of Annanias, Senior. Amos and Elizabeth had one daughter named Florence . Florence Thomas b. 20 Dec 1881 d. 15 Jan 1906 bur Pleasant Hill Bapt, married on 18 Feb 1897 T. Brady Birmingham b. 9 Feb 1869 d. 15 Nov 1956, a son of John R. and Sareptha Birmingham. Following the death of Florence in 1906, T. B. married second Keziah Stewart b. 30 Mar 1873 d. 18 Jul 1921.

Following the death of Amos, Elizabeth married on 2 Nov 1884 Joseph M. Birmingham. The son of John and Serreptha, J. M. Birmingham was b. 20 Oct 1860 d. 20 May 1942. The children of Elizabeth and J.M. Birmingham are (A) Exie Birmingham b 2 Aug 1885 d. 28 Dec 1978 bur Pleasant Hill Bapt, married Ellis Gatile Baucom b. 31 Jan 1881 d. 19 Apr 1914…she married twice; (B) Ettra Birmingham b. 13 Mar 1887 d. 1 Feb 1907, married 9 Mar 1904 Elias Henry Baucom, son of Henry M. and Tobitha; (C) Julia Birmingham, married to E. H. Baucom after the death of her sister; (D) John Birmingham, married 1911 Thelma Brewer; (E) Flossie Birmingham b 19 Apr 1892 d. 3 Feb 1975 bur Pleasant Hill Bapt, married George Lee Chaney b. 31 Dec 1890 d. 22 Apr 1962; (F) Flora P. Birmingham Married 1918 Julious P. Baucom; (G) Jodie Annie Bessie Birmingham b. 9 Mar 1894 d. 3 Dec 1931 bur Rocky Mount Bapt, married 22 Mar 1908 Hiram Cornelious Parker b. 25 Jan 1887 d. 1 Jul 1943, the son of Henry and Laura; (H) Leroy Albert Birmingham b. 2 Dec 1900 d. 5 Sep 1964, married 28 Jan 1919 Jennie Belle Moore, the dau of W. E. and Arrana; and (I) Marjorie Birmingham b. 1898, married Thomas A. Little b. 1898, the son of J. T. and Mollie.

C. Marion Hampton Thomas b. Sep 1864, married in 1905 Florence A., b. Sep 1865. In the 1900 Union County Census, Marion and family are listed as living in Buford Township. Also living at the house is his stepsister Teela Ramsey. The children of Marion and Florence are (A) Telie Thomas b. Jan 1897; (B) Susan A. Thomas b. Jan 1897; (C) George Thomas b. 1902; (D) Henry Thomas b. 1907; and (E) Marcus Thomas b. 1909.
