Although the first film adaption of To Kill a Mockingbird is considered one of the greatest films of all time, English teachers, students, and fans of the book were quite disappointed with it. Where was Aunt Alexandra? Why was Calpurnia's role so small? People argued that the film did not include many of the book's key themes. Jem did not learn about bravery from Mrs. Dubose. Calpurnia did not bring the kids to her church, so they did not get the taste of prejudice that they had in the novel. Many argued that the movie was way too short.

Now, Columbia-Tristar films is creating the ultimate To Kill a Mockingbird film. It is more than two hours long, but has all the scenes of the book, and contains all the main themes and elements that had been missing in the first movie. The characters are all here as well. Aunt Alexandra, Uncle Jack, Lula, Francis, and everyone else that the book had mentioned all appear and are portrayed by film veterans and today's hottest actors and actresses.

Leading an all star cast is Academy-Award winning Kevin Spacey as the lawyer Atticus Finch. He is the father of Scout (The Grinch's Taylor Momsen) and Jem (Big Daddy's twin brothers, Dylan and Cole Sprouse). He is forced to defend Tom Robinson (The Wood's Taye Diggs), a negroe, against Bob Ewell (Jack Nicholson) and his daughter Mayella Violet Ewell (Dawson's Creek's Katie Holmes), a white-trash family.

Also joining the cast is Calpurnia (Vivica A. Fox), who is given a larger role than in the first movie, and Aunt Alexandra (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who actually shows up in this film. Appearances are made by such great stars as Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Michelle Phieffer, Gloria Stuart, Delroy Lindo, Tom Hanks, Tyra Banks, Frankie Muniz, and many others.

The movie has recently wrapped up filming. It is scheduled to be released in Fall of 2001. Distribution plans are being made, as well as an idea to divide the film into two full-length movies, Part 1 and Part 2. Decisions have not yet been finalized.
