FISH FARM

We Started experimenting in aquaculture about 1994 with Silver Perch.
In the first year we had almost 100% loss due to birds predication.
The next thing we tried was growing in a tank in a shed, with a flow
through system. For the next few years we experimented with various types,
of filtration, ended up with a biological system using a settling pond
with plants in it. We used Duckweed as food for the Silver Perch
& to clean the water
In 2000 we decided to change to Crayfish, Yabbies & Redclaw, mainly
because they are much easier to harvest & transport
We are presently growing out Redclaw. When we finish our new ponds we will
have one pond with Yabbies so we can compare their commercial value.

THE REDCLAW

Redclaw (cherax Quadricarinatus) is a species of freshwater crayfish native
to tropical Queensland & the Northen Territory.
Redclaw can grow to 100 grams in one year.
Successful reproduction results in a brood of up to 1000 fertilised eggs,
which are carried & carefully nurtured by the mother.

THE YABBY

Yabbies(Cherax Destructor)are widespread throughout many areas of Australia
they can be found living in any body of fresh water, rivers, lakes & Dams.
Yabbies are excellent eating, they can be boiled for a few minutes in
salted water or prepared in a variety of ways. They have a very sweet meat
& the claws of the larger specimens are particularly succulent.
A feed of Yabbies is one of the most delicious meals you can try!
