Competitions
Some of the most successful boards have places were people can hold competitions. There are many types of competition, which I will go over here, as well as the pros and cons of each one.
Post Counts
If you have post count on for every single board, then your members might compete against each other to see how many posts they can get. On some sites, this will get them more money or whatever it is they want. However, the bad thing about this is that they will literally spam your board with meaningless posts. And that isn't a good thing at all, for it will let guests know that they aren't serious about what they're there for.
Forum Games
Games are sure to spark competitive interest in your members. It can be something like "rate the sig/avatar above" or something like who can get the highest score on the worlds hardest game, which can be found here. I never got past level 6. See if you can beat me. =P
Tacet Competition
This is like a support forum, or a help board. Once a member replies with a valid answer, if you close the post then it will give them a sense that they've accomplished something. Or you might have a board to help out those who are having a tough time, and people feel like they've accomplished something if they make others feel better. (Some of them at least.)
"Battles"
This is where the graphics come in. Skins for your site, logos, signatures, minibanners, advertisements, avatars, you name it. People will battle to have the best one, and it will bring a surge to your forum. Maybe even members of the month and such, but make sure you give other people turns to win to, and don't choose the same person over and over. ;)
The Ultimate Competition
This is getting to be staff on your board. If they act maturely, participate a lot, and so forth, you can assure them they might get a chance to be in your staff team. But don't let just anyone in! This is very, very special.
