of all the Istari and head of the White Council. He was originally sent to
Middle-earth in 1000 to aid the Free Peoples in the War against Sauron, but he
became corrupted. When he found out who had the Ring of Power he began to
breed the race of Uruk-hai in Isengard around his tower of Orthanc. He
then sent them out to find the ring. He remained very powerful until the
Ents became angry and attacked, destroying and flooding his caverns. He
was then trapped in Orthanc for a long time, but the Ents had pity on him
and set him free. In the books he went from there to the Shire and took
over making life miserable for the Hobbits. When Frodo, Sam, Merry, and
Pippin returned though they managed to force him out. Then, in the books
Grima killed him by cutting his throat.
