Gil-galad

Gil-galad was born in the First Age.  He is the son of Fingon who is the son of Fingolfin and cousin of Galdriel.  After the fall of Fingolfin he was sent by his father to Círdan in the Havens.  After his father's death he became the last High King of the Noldor.  He led the elves in the Last Alliance with Elendil-the father of Isildur.  They defeated Sauron, but they were both slain.  He had been the bearer of Vilya but he gave it to Elrond before he died.  He was also on of the three greatest of the Eldar.

In the book he met Frodo and Sam as they were traveling through the woods at the very beginning of their journey. The presence of him and him and the other elves actually scared away the Black Rider.
