What is ice racing?

Birch Lake ice racing is stock car style oval track racing on a frozen lake. We run two classes of race cars, 4 cylinder cars with studs allowed on all 4 tires and big cars which cannot run studs on the drive wheels. The format is familiar to race fans with heat races, a consolation race and a feature race making up the day's schedule. Racers earn points and prize money during the regular season and trophys at the end of the season. The atmosphere is casual and fun, with great action on the track. A plowed parking area for spectators is provided with easy access from the Birch Lake boat ramp in Hackensack. Spectator admission is always free, and there is a food shack and outdoor potties for your convenience.

The Birch Lake Ice Racers Association is dedicated to minimizing the environmental impact of racing on the lake by enforcing technical rules on the cars and leaving a clean lake surface after the race day is complete. Only non toxic antifreeze is allowed and any spills are required to be cleaned up immediately. After all, this is the lake we fish, swim, and ski on during the off season when the water is too soft for racing.

The Birch Lake Ice Races are held on Sundays in January, February, and March (good ice conditions provided). Birch Lake is located on the west side of Hackensack, Minnesota. About 50 miles north of Brainerd on highway 371.
