would win control of the Mississippi at
Vicksburg, but control of New Orleans
had also to be won in order to control shipping. Farragut negotiated forts with heavy
artillery and flaming rafts which were put in the ships' way (most remained
wood built at this time).
Admiral David Farragut was
an elite member of the often forgotten Naval war which made up an important
part of the Civil War. Ironclad ships fought tedious battles for costal
islands, and Farragut led a fleet of 40 ships to victory over New Orleans
