Vicksburg
The North's strategy was known as "The Anaconda Plan" after
the snakes that crush their prey by squeezing slowly. In
July of 1863, a critical element of the North's Anaconda Plan is
achieved at Vicksburg. Victory here establishes Northern control
of the Mississippi River, splitting the Confederacy in two.
With the westernmost Confederate states cut off, the
days of the Confederacy are numbered.
