Ulysses S. Grant
Grant was known as U. S. Grant after he allowed a
clerk at West Point to copy his name incorrectly. He was a powerful and imposing military commander. As one of the primary commanders of the Union army
during the Civil War, Grant was responsible for many battle decisions,
including capture of Vicksburg, critical to the North's victory.
He accepted General Lee's surrender
at Appomattox courthouse in 1865,
and later ran for and won the Presidency.
