“I just though you know since we were going to have to do it any way we should practice.”
“Umm you’re, you’re right.”
They day was long and very tiring for every one associated with the play. They got done at about 1 o’clock. Serena grabbed her bag and headed out the door. She saw that girl talking to Darien. She couldn’t help but giggle at the look Darien had. It was a look of distress and panic. She was not use to him looking so scared. She walked over to the two and caught the conversation.
“So I was like wondering if you would have dinner with me tonight. We could have like lots of fun. I know this place in the park that like we could be totally alone!”
She let out a squeal and hugged on to Darien’s arm. He was trying unsuccessfully to pull his arm free. Serena walked over to ‘Barbie’. She named her after the doll because she looked so fake. She walked in between Darien and ‘Barbie’.
“I’m sorry, but Darien already promised me he would take me to dinner.”
She turned to a pale Darien and smiled.
“Come along my dinner date.”
She grabbed his arm and yanked him out of the theater. When they were far enough away from the theater Serena let go of his arm.
“Thank you so much Serena. I guess I owe you one.”
“No way! You are taking me to dinner just like you promised.”
Darien couldn’t help but laugh. They walked down the street and into a restaurant. Serena plopped down into a booth at the far end of the restaurant. Darien slid into the seat across from her. She picked up her menu and started to read. She heard Darien’s laughter and looked at him. His head was buried in his menu, but you still could hear his muffled laughter. She crossly folded her menu and set it on the table. Crossing her arms across her chest she glared at Darien through his menu.
“Just what pray tell are you laughing at?”
Darien looked up at Serena surprised. An amused grin on his face.
“That girl’s reaction. It looked like her face collapsed. She looked like a shriveled prune.”
Serena looked at Darien for a moment then started to giggle. Soon Darien joined in again.
“What was… (Giggle. Giggle)… her name anyway… (Giggle. Giggle)
“’Barbie’ ”
“ ’Barbie’?”
“That’s what I’ve named her. Doesn’t she look so fake?”
“Extremely.”
“What is wrong with her anyway?”
Darien raised his eyebrow.
“Didn’t we agree she looked fake?”
“Yes we did. But beauty is not based on looks. You of all people should know that Darien.”
“I know. That’s not the entire reason I don’t like her. There’s someone else I have in mind.”
Serena let out a delighted squeal and moved close to Darien. Very close to Darien. He became entranced by her perfume. His sense went hay wire and he had to grip both hands to stay in control.
* She can’t find out yet. I’m not ready. She may not even be ready. *
“Come on Darien please tell me! I swear I won’t say a thing to her. Or him.”
Darien spit out the water he was drinking and glared evilly at Serena. She shrugged her shoulders and looked at Darien.
“It is a she Serena.”
“I was just exploring the possibilities.”
Their food arrived and a silence fell upon the two unknown loves. Serena stared at her food deep in thought.
* Now is as good a time as ever. At least he wouldn’t yell at me. The worst that could happen is that he could become angry stalk out of the restaurant cross the street without looking and be hit…Wow I don’t like where that thought is going. *
“Umm Darien?”
Darien looked up from his food startled.
“I know this is personal, but ahhh I was wondering if. You don’t have to tell me if it makes you uncomfortable… But what happened... Ummm where are your parents?”
If Darien was startled from his thoughts he looked ready to drop dead. He turned pale and looked like he couldn’t believe what he just heard. He stared dumbly at Serena. She wiggled in her seat.
“Maybe we should leave.”
She took out her wallet from her purse and left the money with the tip in the center of it. She grabbed Darien’s hand and led him out of the restaurant. Serena led them to the park and they stood on the bridge over the stream. Serena stood in front of Darien and looked deep into his eyes.
“I’m sorry I asked. I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“No, you didn’t it’s just that you… Well, actually you did scare me. I didn’t mean to react the way I did. It’s just I didn’t know you knew.”
“The little birdie told me.”
“Well, it…”
“You don’t have to tell me. I was just curious. I don’t mean to bring back painful memories.”
Darien stared at Serena in awe. She was not some kid who accidentally stumble into a lonely boy with a dreadful past, but a young woman who truly cared about those around her. Who spoke with maturity and caring. Darien saw Serena differently all of a sudden. He realized why he loved her and how much he really cared about her. He decided that maybe she could help him after all. Serena misunderstood his silence for rejection and she turned to leave with tears in her eyes. She squealed in surprise when tow arms were wrapped around her and a head placed one her shoulder.
“I was really young when it happened. I was told that my parent’s car went off a cliff on a stormy night. I was about five when it happened and they diagnosed I had amnesia. When I was healed they stuck me in an orphanage and that’s where I stayed until I was old enough to support myself.”
Serena turned and faced Darien. She had to blink twice before it registered to her Darien was about to cry. She wrapped her arms around him and stood on her tiptoes.
“Oh Darien. I imagine the loneliness you must have felt. I just wish I was there to be your friend. I just want you to know that in the future Me, Andrew, the girls, we will always be by your side. Me most of all. I will be your family. If you want me to be.”
She gave Darien a hug then took her leave. She felt he needed some time to be alone.
* He probably doesn’t want me to see him cry. *
Darien watched as she walked off. He stared at the spot she had occupied for the longest time.
* What should I do! This is so confusing! She really cares! *
Darien walked back to his apartment and plopped down on his couch. Deep in thought he thought about what Serena said.
* Me most of all. *
The words echoed in his mind. He looked around at his empty apartment. It screamed lonely with a vengeance. Not until now had he noticed how terrible lonely his apartment was.
* Me most of all. *
Again the words filled his thoughts.
* I love her. *
The words just popped in there. They surprised him so much that he jumped off the couch and started to pace the floor. Then he stopped and walked to the balcony throwing open the doors he looked out upon the starlit city and placed his hands on the rail. With a heavy sigh he hung his head.
* What am I going to do? The Angel deserves so much more than I could ever give her, But then why does she like me? I have to find a why to tell her how I feel. Maybe mom and dad will know what to do. *
He closed the balcony doors, grabbed his keys, made sure his apartment was all locked up and walked towards the park. He didn’t know why he didn’t walk directly to the park. Instead he walked down a different road. Before long he found himself in front of Serena’s house. He was about to walk in front of it when he saw Serena looking up at the stars from her balcony. The Moons light outlined her form and made her look like a starlit Angel. He marveled at her beauty. He heard mumbles and hopped the fence to get closer. He saw another figure standing next to her. Quietly he strained to her them.
“So Serena do you like the guy or not?”
“I don’t know Sammy. I want to be apart of his life. I’m afraid he wouldn’t want me though.”
“Well, why not? I mean you’ve improved yourself quite a lot. You have better grades, you eat slower, and you are actually on time to school if not early. The guy has to be a moron not to have already fallen for you.”
“Sammy you don’t even know him.”
“So. I know my sister and how people react when they are around her. If he doesn’t want you then he is not good enough for you. And any ways any guy who doesn’t want you has to be totally mental.”
Serena let out a little laugh.
“You are over exaggerating.”
“Is it that Darien guy you always talk about?”
Serena sighed and looked at the full moon.
“Yes, it is.”
“I knew it! Did you tell him how you feel?”
“I told him I would love to be his family.”
“Does the guy have a family?”
“No.”
“Then he would love to have you in his family. I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t want that.”
Serena smiled and hugged her little brother. He turned and walked back into the house. Darien watched her. He memorized the way her hair blew in the breeze around her face. A soft smile spread across her delicate lips. He shook himself out of his thoughts. He smiled at her one more time then he hopped the fence and continued toward the park.
* I wish I had a brother like that. But if Serena meant what she said then I will have all the family I can get *
Darien walked to his parent’s graves and sat down between them.
“Thank you mom, dad. The Angel you sent me is perfect in every way.”
