Chapter 5

Linux is an operating system that was created by a student.  He created it in the University of Helsinki in Finland.  Linux had an interest in Minix, which was a small UNIX system and then later made a system that had Minix standards.  The .02 version was first released in 1991 and then in 1994 they released version 1.0, which was Linux Kernel. In the 1990s they were unaware of Lenox’s potential they thought it was just a computer hobbyist project from the young student.  Linux had a Mozilla web browser project, which lead to applications online. The full current version was released in December 2003 and they try to continue with the developments.

Distribution for Linux gave free software when you installed it onto your computer.  It supported many hardware platforms.  One was 64 studio which was an attempts to specialize in audio and video production on x86-64 workstation. Another distribution that it had was called Elive, it was a live CD and distribution featuring Enlightenment as the only window manager and its goal was to be easy to use and intuitive.

One way to get Linux distribution is to download it online.  Then to install the distribution the person would have to open the file and it will simply install it.  Another way you can get the distribution is to buy it at a computer store and it usually comes in CDs.  To install it the person would put it in the CD ROM so the computer could read it.  Then you would go to my computers then click on the CD and simply install it.  Installing it is usually fast and easy.

One of the most popular application is called Applix Applixware.  People say that it was a good application because it is more user friendly than other programs because it was more bug free than early Linux and other windows operating systems.  Another application is Corel WordPerfect for Linux.  WordPerfect is a word processing application, which was owned by Corel.  WordPerfect 1.0 represented a popularity in the late 1980s and the 1990s.

People who use Linux are unlikely to get a virus because its operating system is different from Microsoft which gives Linux an advantage.  Hackers want to target the majority of people which is Microsoft.  Linux got whipped out by Microsoft that’s why Microsoft is known better than Linux and I have not heard of Linux until I took this computer curse.  For Linux people would need training just to use it since most people are use to using Microsoft windows.  For instance Mac laptops are different from other laptops.
