![]() 26 DECEMBER It's nearly the end of yet another year of ref bumps, promos, run-ins, screwjobs, "shoots" and backstage politics. Oh yeah, actual wrestling too. This all means that it's time for my (week late) personal "end of year awards" for the start of Y2K!!! Just remember, these are all my personal picks for awards I felt like talking about so I'd appreciate it if I am spared of the "you don't know jack!" emails when you're all done reading the column! Hope you enjoy it. WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: Triple-H - The World Wrestling Federation has been on top form for most of the year on pay-per-view and it's no surprise why when the main who has headlined most of the has been a grade A performer through out 2000. Great on the mic, one great in-ring performance after another and has help lift others to bigger and better things. If somebody was seriously going to challenge Chris Beniot (who was an extremely close second for me) for this award then you have to be at your game and it's no wonder why they call him The Game. Hot matches with The Rock, Chris Beniot, Chris Jericho, Mick Foley and a long feud with Kurt Angle said it all in 2000. Regardless to what anybody says, The Rock was definitely a contender for this award. Dwayne Johnson is a damn good worker who is getting better and better all the time. Plus he was nothing short of great on PPV. Other contenders: Chris Beniot, Lance Storm, The Rock, Yoshijiro Tajiri. TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR: Edge & Christian - Just like I expected all along, they do reek of awesomeness!! Started of the year in a little bit of a predicament when their entrances caused loud, high pitch screams and a corus of deep boo's. End of the year and it's the exact opposite which hasn't done the Hardy Boyz any favours! Two 5 star pay-per-view performances at WrestleMania 2000 and SummerSlam, a heel turn, big wins over main event players, a charisma injection, and angles with midgets, old footage and kazoo's has done Adam Copeland's and Jason Reso's current and future careers the world of good. For me, they were the stand out team in the WWF this year and when you have two other great teams in the Dudleyz and the Hardyz that is some accomplishment. A total riot on the mic too which probably will have swayed a few more fans to their side of the fence. Their five WWF title reigns didn't hurt them either!! Other contenders: Dudley Boyz, Hardy Boyz. MATCH OF THE YEAR: Edge & Christian Vs. Hardy Boyz Vs. Dudley Boyz (SummerSlam) - I admit that after the awesome match between Cactus Jack and Triple-H at the Royal Rumble in January, I kinda looked at good matches a bit more negatively because I wanted this match to be my match of the year. Didn't happen though! For me, a sign of a great match is when you can just slip that tape into your VCR and watch it again and again without even a sniff of boredom. Bret Vs. Owen at WrestleMania X, the Shawn Michaels Vs. Razor Ramon ladder matches, Michaels Vs. Undertaker in the Hell in a Cell, Bret Hart Vs. Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13 are just some of the matches that do this for me. SummerSlam 2000 added another match to my all time favourites. An absolutely fantastic match which blew the similar WrestleMania match off the planet. Other contenders: Cactus Jack Vs. Triple-H (Royal Rumble & No Way Out), Edge & Christian Vs. Hardyz Vs. Dudleyz (WrestleMania 2000), Triple-H Vs. The Rock (Judgment Day), Chris Beniot Vs. Chris Jericho (Judgment Day) FEUD OF THE YEAR: The Rock Vs. Triple-H. This feud just doesn't look like ending! I could have went with a number of real feuds from backstage in WCW or Scott Hall Vs. The Police but I decided to stick with something that we definitely know is a work!! The only feud in the business that has gone on for a good while and actually makes sense within the storylines. HHH Vs. Angle would have won had it had an actual ending but with Angle now standing alongside Stephanie (once again) and Vince McMahon, here's to hoping that we get that ending. Anyway, having clashed on weekly TV many times in both matches and promo's as well as four times on pay-per-view, which included two good singles matches, I think these two deserve the award ahead of everyone else. It's a shame that WCW and ECW were not more stable this year because they both had smaller feuds that could have been a lot bigger than one had they been given a chance. Other contenders: HHH Vs. Kurt Angle, Hardy Boyz Vs. Edge & Christian. BABYFACE OF THE YEAR: The Rock. Was there any doubt? 1999 was all about if The Rock could eclipse the standards set by Austin 3:16. In 2000, The Rock completely laid the smack down on every doubter. TV cameos, movie roles, chart singles, face all over political programmes and now officially one of the biggest stars ever on pay-per-view. As long as the wrestling industry doesn't fall to the depths it did in the early 90's and Raw's rating stays above a 5.0 then Mr. Johnson will continue to present wrestling in a positive manner to the general public and make a fortune in the process. The only problem is that the WWF office seems to want Steve Austin to be the number one babyface. If Austin is only going to be around for another year then that is probably the way to go. If not, move Austin out of the way so the real star can shine if ya smell just what The Rock is cookin'. Other contenders: Chris Jericho, Rob Van Dam, Steve Austin, Mick Foley. HEEL OF THE YEAR: Triple-H. Started 2000 just like he finished 1999. His four month title reign at the start of the year was the longest WWF title reign in 3 years. Retiring Mick Foley after two great matches, becoming the first heel to leave WrestleMania with the WWF title, making Chris Jericho's WWF title reign disappear from the records, a screwy WWF title win at Judgment Day and confirmation of his heel status with a sledgehammer to Steve Austin's napper helped make the fans hate him more than ever. However, I don't see him going through 2001 without turning babyface so the boys in the WWF offices better do something to help make Kurt Angle, Chris Beniot, William Regal and probably Steve Austin and Chris Jericho better heels than HHH was this year and that will not be an easy task. Scott Steiner was a serious contender for the accolades too but he now has the same problem that The Rock had back in the spring of last year - the fans want to cheer him. When WCW eventually turn him babyface, I hope they just make sure that he has had his blow off match with Bill Goldberg first and that they have somebody (Booker T or Lance Storm for example) to replace him in that spot. Other contenders: Scott Steiner, Lance Storm, Kurt Angle, Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley, Justin Credible. ANNOUNCER OF THE YEAR: Jim Ross. Has come in for some heavy criticism this year some a lot of people for messing up names of moves and overly hyping matches but you can't really expect 100% week in, week out from a guy that works as passionately on the mic that good ol' JR does. Still calls a match better than anybody has done in this business. For me, Joey Styles was the only contender but he doesn't;t have the same impact on a show that Jim Ross does. Styles himself is just as guilty as overhyping wrestlers. If I hear that Chilly Willy used to fight in tough man contests for fun one more time..... Other contender: Joey Styles. BEST COLOUR COMMENTATOR: Jerry Lawler. The second part of the best announce team ever in the wrestling business. What would WWF TV be without Lawler's gags? Ross and Lawler play off each other perfectly but this award was a lot closer than the previous one because someone they call the 'Human Wrecking Machine' is on his ass. Personally, I think Tazz is better on colour than anybody else but I don't wanna see him in that position for much longer. Get him back in the ring, kicking ass and talking trash like he does best. Joel Gertner has done a good job on ECW shows too but the Styles/Gertner combination doesn't have the same effect as Ross/Lawler. Although they weren't regular colour workers, I want to mention that I thought the Insane Clown Posse and Konnan were both hilarious on the mic when given the opportunity. I think whoever is in charge of WCW should seriously consider sticking K-Dawg at the commentery booth perminately. Other contenders: Tazz, Konnan, Joel Gertner. CHARACTER OF THE YEAR: Undertaker. While I have always respected the man, I can't say I understood why others loved the gimmick. 2000 was the only time in the Undertaker's 10 year adventure that I actually wanted to see him on TV. An awesome comeback at Judgment Day, a new bad ass look which is more Mark Callaway than Undertaker and his two entrance themes 'American Bad Ass' by Kid Rock and 'Rollin' by Limp Bizkit got this fan hooked on the new gimmick. Personally, I don't understand why people want to see him return to his old colours. A WWF title run doesn't look far away. Other contenders: The Rock, Eddie Guerrero, Crash Holly CARD OF THE YEAR: WWF's Judgment Day PPV. This was the closest category to call just because the WWF has produced many sizzling hot pay-per-views this year. In the end, when a PPV produces two match of the year candidates with a fantastic Chris Beniot Vs. Chris Jericho submission match and an a great Iron Man match with The Rock Vs. Triple-H then that will always make a card better than others. Other contenders: Backlash, Fully Loaded, Spring Stampede MOST ABYSMAL WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: Billy Gunn and Chyna tied. This one wasn't close. It had run away winners! These two idiots are the worst workers in the big 3 today bar none. It so frustrating for me when I see these two consistently pushed ahead of the likes of Hardcore Holly, Al Snow, D-Lo Brown, Tazz, Raven, Dean Malenko, Val Venis and many other talents in the WWF. If it's frustrating for me then I can only imagine how pissed off most of the WWF locker room is at these two. Billy Gunn - Best pure athlete in the WWF? My arse he is! He gets blown up after 3 minutes of a match, barely knows five moves which he can't do properly, get's outpaced when chasing broads with high heels around ringside and he just gave the man many call the best worker in the world the worst two matches I have ever seen him wrestle. Oh yeah, great music by the way! Everytime I hear it, I think I am watching Beverly Hills Cop 2!!! Chyna has the nerve to critise Trish Status by claiming she has no talent and he was only hired because of her looks! So does Chyna think she was hired because of her wrestling ability? It nothing to do with the fact you looked like a dude or that you were between the sheets with a member of the Clique did it? Trish should be given credit for her ever improving in ring and mic skills which is a lot more than I can say about Chyna. Trish has shown more progress in 6 months than Chyna has shown in 4 years. Trish is working with women and getting better rapidly. Chyna works with some of the best workers in the world and gets worse by the week. As far as looks go, please Chyna! Don't compare yourself to Trish Status because the only reason a few kids brought your Playboy was to check what you really had between your legs! Stick to nude modelling anyway doll because that is all you are - A big pair of fake tits! Trish in Playboy would quadruple your sales. I'm actually thinking about changing my match of the year winner to Val Venis because how he managed to have a bearable match with someone who only threw lame arse elbows through out the match is a mystery to me. When you make David Arquette and Tank Abbott look like Chris Beniot and Triple-H then you should it's time to hang up those boots. Here is something for all you marks to do. Whenever you feel like dogging The Rock or X-Pac or somebody when your trying to act cool, just ask yourself this question - Is (enter wrestler here) worse than Chyna or Billy Gunn? If the answer is no then just SHUT UP! Other contenders: None! MOST ABYSMAL MATCH OF THE YEAR: The Stooges vs. Crash Holly (King of the Ring). Run away winner here! Whenever you two old farts who have no business in a wrestling ring is bad. When you do that then put them in drag the you gotta ask with pervert booked this crap! Don't remember much about the match and that is the way I want remember it! Other contenders: I don't even want to think about that! BREAKTHROUGH TALENT OF 2000: Rikishi Phatu. There was no way that after seeing Fatu from the Headshinkers (who I actually thought should have been pushed during that whole "make a change" gimmick") gain something like 100lbs+ and work wearing a gigantic thong that he'd be in the position he is today. However, I did catch on pretty quick. After his match against Triple-H on a Smackdown show early this year to be precise. To get over without saying a word is always a job well done. Surprisingly, the dances with his buddies Too Cool didn't get boring as quickly as expected which also helped his career. In the ring, he may not be the best worker but given the right opponent, this guy can go some. Can't see him as a future WWF champion though. Other contenders: Kurt Angle, Kid Kash, Steve Corino. MOST ENTERTAINING WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: Edge & Christian. This category is solely about promo's/angles/storylines and not in ring product. Credit where it's due, Mick Foley has been a star since taking the commissioner role, Joel Gertner has always been a riot on the mic, Mikey Whipwreck and the Sinister Minister make me laugh for reasons I have yet to discover and Crash Holly's 24/7 hardcore title adventures where hilarious at times but Edge & Christian just reeked of coolosity since the heel turn after WrestleMania. Midget Hardyz and Dudleyz, the short "return" of Los Conquistadors, shoving midget rappers in trash cans, dressing up in chicken suits and in Elvis costumes, birthday bashes, kazoo music, funny glasses and the world famous 37 second pose were just some of the fantastic material that these two guy from someplace in Canada gave us in 2000. Even their ring entrance is entertaining. I just hope that the WWF does break them up too soon and when they do, I hope they don't lose any charisma. Other contenders: Mick Foley, The Rock, Joel Gertner, Konnan, Kanyon, Whipwreck/Sinister Minister. BEST OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE YEAR: www.stormwrestling.com The only category that the WWF didn't win! Make no mistake about it, this site won because of the efforts put into it by Lance Storm himself. It has everything that every other wrestlers site has (they all don't have what this one does though) but the one thing that puts this site head and shoulders above the rest is the interaction between wrestler and fan. It's not just about one fan saying "oh Lance, I think your the best!" and Lance replying "oh thank you very much, I love all my fans!" It's a place where fans can interact with a wrestling star about nearly anything interesting and relevant and Lance doesn't hide nothing. If he has something to say then he says it and that is something that you have to respect, especially from a pro wrestler! Regularly updated comment board, audio commentary and written commentary which has help Lance get a lot more fans and will hopefully help him get into the position he belongs in WCW next year. Other contenders: www.perrysaturn.com, www.chrisjericho.com, www.stevecorino.com PROMOTION OF THE YEAR: WWF. Bottom line is that ratings don't lie. Attendance figures don't lie. PPV buy-rates don't lie and Merchandise sales don't lie. And don't blame the lack of opposition either. When you gross over 50% of all the pay-per-view generated money then that speaks volumes in itself. It going to be the same for a long time too.
