The Lanhams of Maryland and the District of Columbia

Compiled by Dr. Howard G. Lanham

The following site contains lists of primary source mentions of persons named Lanham living in the State of Maryland or the District of Columbia (once part of Maryland). It is not a genealogy as such since there are many mentions that might belong to one of several people with the same name and since many of the mentions give no clue to the relationship between the individual and other Lanhams. Please click on this link for introductory and background material.

  1. This is a significant record. There is no direct proof that Ralph Lanham or Edward Lanham were sons of John Lanham, the immigrant. This record establishes that John Palmer, Jr., who married Mary Lanham (daughter of John Lanham, Jr.) was related in some way to Ralph and so was Edward Lanham. A simple theory would be that Ralph and Edward were both sons of John Lanham the immigrant. An unsupported but nonetheless commonly accepted claim is that Edward Lanham was a son of Josias Lanham, who settled in Kent County, Maryland. The individual who first made this association did not offer any primary source verification for the claim (see William Joseph Lanham, "The Lanham Family's Seventeenth-Century Origins from Maryland's Eastern Shore" Maryland Historical Magazine Volume 81 (Spring 1986):91). There is no endnote citing a source. [Detailed Discussion of Controversy]
  2. This may be John Lanham, the immigrant, and a record that establishes that Edward was his son. Unfortunately, it is not 100% certain just who the John and Edward are. No other record links the names John and Elizabeth during the period.
  3. The term "nearest kin" should not be understood too literally. It might be any relation who signed off on the inventory.
  4. This entry appears to have an incorrect year. The Holy Trinity Records as a group seems to have a large number of errors or internal inconsistencies. The majority of sources give Edward's birth year as 1864.
  5. She may have been married to Daniel Frazier.
  6. John Lanham may be the same with Revolutionary War Service in the Maryland Line, who was discharged as disabled on December 27, 1779.
  7. She generally appears as Eliza.
