Mikey started working there in 1991 with Helen Razor on their breakfast show. When she left at the end of 1996 Paul stepped in for a year. When he left Steve Abbott and Jen Oldershaw became Mikey’s new co-hosts for 1998. Mikey used to get up at 4:50 am to start broadcasting at 6 am. For seven years Mikey called the 6th storey studio in the Ultimo Studios in Darling Harbour home for 3 hours a weekday. That was until Friday 4th December 1998, his last broadcast. A webcam was set up in this day (and the previous Friday) so we could all join in the fun. Mikey had all his friends in the studio with him to celebrate the seven great years. Guests in the studio included Paul, Adam Spencer, HG Nelson, Sarah Mac, Michael Tunn, Mark Kennedy, Laura Williams, Jo Fahey, Arnold Frollows, and other JJJ workers and personalities.
Paul also said goodbye to the station forever on Dec. 4th. He had popped in almost every Friday in 1998 between 8:07 – 9:00 am. Actually he spent most of the year, or so it seems, on bed with a nasty chest cold/flu and the other parts of the year overseas (Edinburgh, India). In 1997 Paul co-hosted the Breakfast Show (6-9 am) with Mikey. It was in this year Mikey founded the revolutionary radio serial Captain Pants , that also continued every Friday in 1998. Before being asked onto Mikey’s show in ’97 Paul had a regular guest spot on Gloria Marshall’s drive time spot.
Stephen Abbott , more commonly known to Triple J listeners as the The Sandman, has worked on JJJ for some time now. He first appeared on Mikey and Paul’s breakfast show in 1997 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. In 1998 he became one third of the breakfast team with Mikey and Jen Oldershaw. Sandy has had many radio serials and stints starting from 1997. These include Observations From A Moving Vehicle , 204 Bell St. , Love Song Dedications , World Series Merrick and Rosso , and most recently The Sounds of Sand .
