Bodiam
Castle
Bodiam Castle, built in the 14th century, is one of the earliest examples of
a fortress in which comfortable living quarters were planned. Although it is
a ruin, the hall, chapel, and other residential areas can be seen. The
original iron-plated oak portcullis is still in place at the main entrance.

Edinburgh
Castle
The castle that dominates the Scottish capital is an agglomeration of
buildings dating from the 14th to the 17th centuries. The Scottish crown
jewels (the crown dates from 1540) are kept under guard in a stone vault in
the castle.

Himeji
Castle, Japan
Himeji, a castle in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, was originally built in the
mid-14th century and its design is an attempt to combine strength with
elegance. The building is made of wood coated with white plaster. The high
stone wall on which the castle is set was necessary to protect the
inhabitants from attackers using firearms, weapons that had recently been
introduced to Japan from Europe.

View of Bodiam Castle
Bodiam Castle was built in Sussex during the 14th century and was among the
first castles to combine the needs of defence with some comfort for those
living there. The moat and high curtain walls provided strong defences, but
there were also carefully planned living quarters within the walls,
including a hall and a chapel. The castle was damaged in the 17th century
during the English Civil War, but was restored in the early 20th century and
bequeathed to the nation by Lord Curzon, a notable British statesman.
