hang When a program or the Windows system stops responding to input from the keyboard or mouse.

hard disk Disk that is sealed into its disk drive.

hardware profile Description of your computer's hardware resources.

header Lines at the top of an e-mail message that contain the address, return address, date, and other information about the message, not including the body (text) of the message.

hibernate Method of shutting down Windows that saves the state of your desktop, so that when you start Windows again, the same windows and programs are open.

hidden file File whose Hidden attribute is selected so that the file doesn't appear in Windows Explorer.

hidden partition Partitions whose file system Windows XP can't read, and which therefore is inaccessible from Windows XP. PartitionMagic and other third-party disk utilities can mark partitions as hidden.

hierarchical file system System of storing files on disks, in which files are stored in folders and folders can contain other folders.

High Contrast Accessibility option that uses a high contrast color scheme, and increases legibility wherever possible.

History List of recently displayed Web pages, maintained by a browser.

hive Group of Registry entries (similar to a folder). Each subtree of the directory-like structure of the Registry is one hive, and is stored in a separate file.

home folder Similar to the My Documents folder, in Windows 2000 and NT. Most programs store files in the My Documents folder rather than the home folder.

home page Main (or starting) page of a Web site. Also used to refer to a browser's start page.

HomeRF Standard, with IEEE 802.11b, for wireless LAN communications.

host address On the Internet, address of a host computer.

host computer Computer that has the resources to be shared over a LAN, direct network connection, or the Internet.

hot docking Docking or undocking a laptop without turning it off.

hot swapping Installing or uninstalling a piece of hardware while the computer is turned on.

hover color Color a Web page link turns when the mouse pointer is on it.

HSV Numerical way of describing a color by its hue, saturation, and luminescence value.

HT file HyperTerminal connection file, with extension .ht.

HTML Hypertext Markup Language, the language in which Web pages are written. You can create files in HTML by using a Web page editor.

HTML mail or HTML messages E-mail messages formatted using HTML.

HTTP Hypertext Transfer Protocol, the language that Web browsers and Web servers use to communicate with each other.

HTTPS Secure version of HTTP, the protocol with which Web browsers communicate with Web servers.

hub Device to which all other computers connect in a star topology LAN.

hyperlink See link.

HyperTerminal connection Configuration file (with extension .ht) containing the specifications HyperTerminal needs for connecting to another computer.

hypertext Interlinked text.

Hypertext Markup Language See HTML.

Hypertext Transfer Protocol See HTTP.
