Central America and the Caribbean is a transition
area between North and South America. In most of the area there
are disputes between the poor - mostly the descendants of the
indigenous inhabitants - and the rich - for the most part the
descendants culturally of the Spanish invaders. There is also
tension with the United States, for the most part supporting
the rich and American corporations. At present (2006) the fighting
takes the form of riots and police death squads rather than outright
war. Chiapas in Mexico is the scene of resistance from the Maya
against the policies of the government. |
