These "Ojo de Dios" (God's Eye) also called the "Ojo de Oro" (Eye of Gold) are from South America, its origins with the native people of that continent. They are made by holding two sticks to form an equilateral cross and then are wrapped in yarn in a particualar fashion to form the "eye." By alternating the colors of the yarn, the finished product actually has the appearence of a stylized eye, and its four points represent the solstices and equinoxes. They are as protective as they are decorative.
Hold the two dowels to form an equilateral cross, and wrap your first color yarn around the center to secure it. Now begin to work outward. Wrap the yarn completely around one dowel, and then trail it to the next dowel, always wrapping clockwise. Wrap that dowel, and then continue to the next. Every once in a while stop and push the yarn down against the center so that you have a tight weave. When you have wrapped the yarn within a half inch of the end of the dowels, stop and wrap the yarn several times tightly around one point. You can then tie it off, leaving a loop so you can hang it up. If you want to make it a protective talisman, take it into your magick circle and and charge it. They hang well on a door, over a window, or anywhere else they will be of use.
