Other Resources for
Finding Newsgroups
Newsgroups are
very similar to listservs in that they allow
easy, fast, an inexpensive sharing of resources
and ideas among thousands of people around the
world. Newsgroups seem to offer a much, much
larger variety of topics than listservs, covering
all types of interests from traveling to folk
stories. Newsgroups are not limited to people in
any professional field and are generally not
moderated, thus topics of conversation tend to be
very...free.
Newsgroups do not
come directly to your email account like
listservs do. You must go out onto the Internet
to enter the Newsgroup and read the discussion.
This does have its conveniences, though. Since
newsgroups do not go to your e-mail account, you
will not have tons of messages in your inbox like
you do with a listserv. Newsgroups are also
threaded, i.e., responses to comments are listed
in order by topic which makes them much easier to
read. (view graphic - 28K - of a threaded
discussion)

If you are using
the Netscape browser, you can easily subscribe to
newsgroups. When you find a link to a newsgroup,
just click on the link and you will automatically
be subscribed, assuming your ISP provides access
to this newsgroup. If not, you may need to
contact them and ask them to include the
newsgroup.
If you are not
using Netscape, you will need to talk to your
computer center to find out how your system deals
with newsgroups.
