| As we the cadets progress, new goals and expectations are created. I was given the task of being your battalion commander for this semester. Following are the major issues I will address in my philosophy and what I expect from the Mighty Tiger Battalion. The first is uniform wear, an issue that is of high concern in the battalion. The next is conduct, which affects every one. Another major issue is participation in battalion activities, which is the main reason some cadets have more awards than others do. PT participation is a vital factor in your grade and critical in preparation for the Cadet Challenge. The Company leadership this year will play a key role in involvement. The last issue I will address is drill and ceremonies. Participation in this will show dedication to the program as well as cadets’ attitude. Uniform wear, over the past two years seems to have faded. Uniform wear of this program should show our great sense of pride and respect for ourselves. As commander of this battalion, I expect that each cadet not have more than Three unexcused non-wear. I believe our pride in our program will reflect on our uniform wear. One of the most difficult things for cadets to understand is our conduct policy. So, my focus will be on POLICY 17, it will be enforced. Other minor offenses will be dealt with as the company leadership may. Leadership will use counseling statements and demerits as necessary. Participation in battalion activities by the cadet body seems to be a problem. These activities do numerous things for you, from helping you earn awards in our program, to recognition throughout the city. I expect each cadet to attend at least two battalion activities this semester. Team participation is another concern due to the lack of cadets willing to participate. Teams seem to be a strong point in our program but it appears to be fading. I expect influence from commanders as well as enthusiasm among team members. Participation in PT every week is an important part of our program. Besides the fact of it being part of your grade, PT is designed to mentally challenge you as well as prepare you for the end of the semester cadet challenge. I expect each cadet to have no more than three unexcused PT absences. I also notice cadets complaining about the officers not doing PT. If this continues, my leadership and I will have no problem running PT. This year I want to see more leadership delegation in the teaching process as well as information passing. Information passing is a key idea of mine and I would like to see how it develops. I would like the company commanders to back brief command and staff meetings to their company in order to inform the company of things that are discussed at command and staff meetings The proficiency of Drill and Ceremonies has begun to diminish. As an attempt to raise the proficiency the company leadership will teach you IAW FM 3-21.5 and will have regular drill downs. I have always seen the problem of squad leaders not getting to know their cadets so take advantage of D&C day to interact with your fellow cadets. Time utilization will be the key to a successful block of D&C, so I expect that from Company Commanders. This philosophy is the guideline from which I will run the battalion. I look forward to a great year and hope for the best. If there are any questions please feel free to ask me. Simon C. Valdez C/MAJ, AJROTC Commanding |
