cordy'n'xander Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered

Season 2, Episode 16 (Episode 28 of entire series)

This episode is a turning point for Cordy's and Xander's relationship...features the return of Amy Madison and an appearance by Jenny Calendar. Also, Harmony pops up in this episode. Buffy is conspicuously absent for much of this episode; her character's been turned into a rat. A darn funny Valentine's Day ep., plus music from Devon and Oz. What more could you ask for?

PLOT:

Show opens with Buffy fighting a vamp in the graveyard. After she bests him, she pulls Xander up from the ground. They're talking about love...Xander says that all of the other chicks he's fallen for were either monsters or "unavailable" -- he asks Buffy for her advice regarding Cordelia and what to give her for Valentine's Day. He shows her a necklace he's picked up, and Buffy says it's nice.

Next day, we see Cordy walking up the stairs to school; she catches up with Harmony and the other girls and begins talking excitedly about what to wear to the dance. But Harmony snubs her and makes remarks about Xander. Cordy asks what that has to do with it, and Harmony asks if Cordy and Xander are planning to wear matching outfits, because if they are, Harmony's planning to yak. So the girls walk away, leaving Cordy to start evaluating just what it is she's doing with Xander anyway.

Basically what happens is this: at the Bronze, Xander gives Cordy the necklace and he says that maybe they have something more than hormones going on. Cordy likes the necklace, but she breaks up with him. This sends Xander into a tailspin.

The next day at school, Xander corners Amy to see if she can do a spell for him. She tries to tell him that she's not a witch, that that was her mom -- (see Catherine Madison ABC Page and The Witch Episode Page -- but Xander tells Amy he saw her turn in "invisible homework." Amy reluctantly agrees to cast a spell to make Cordelia fall in love with Xander. Xander plans to break up with Cordy after she's affected by the spell.

Suddenly, though, it seems that every female in Sunnydale wants a piece of Xander. Cordy can't understand why Harmony and her other friends are chastising her for breaking up with Xander, and Xander's suddenly got to turn down a lot of chicks, including Amy, Buffy, and Jenny Calendar! Xander goes home only to discover Willow in his bed, wearing a nightshirt. She comes on to him big-time, backs him against a door. She tells him that she wants him to be her first.

Things get hairy in this episode; when Amy comes into the library to hit on Xander, she and Buffy get into a tiff. Amy turns Buffy into a rat, and Oz is sent to look for her, which he does, after hitting Xander for upsetting Willow. Thankfully, Willow didn't tell Oz the reason she was upset! Anyhoo, Cordy's getting torn apart by angry chicks, and Xander rescues her. They go to Buffy's house, leaving Giles and Amy to set about undoing the love spell.

At Buffy's house, Cordy leaves the kitchen to get some bandages or something, and Xander's alone with Buffy's mom. Joyce is also affected by the spell, and she tries to hit on Xander, too. It's amusing. Xander and Cordy go up to Buffy's room, where Xander's yanked through a window by Angel, who's still intent on destroying Buffy's friends. However, Xander is saved from this attack by a very-much-in-love-with-him Drusilla! Angel can't understand this turn of events, and he has some good lines. In fact, this whole episode is full of good lines.

Basically what happens is Xander and Cordy are trapped in Buffy's basement as a mob of women tries to break down the door. Cordy learns why Xander did the spell in the first place, and she's pretty moved by it. Giles and Amy turn Buffy back into Buffy, and then they undo the love spell. Everything's back to normal, pretty much. The next day at school, Cordy chews out her friends and tells them she can date whoever she wants, "no matter how lame he is!" Oh...Willow's pretty upset by the whole incident, and I guess that's a good thing to know.

What Got the Job Done:

1. Giles and Amy did some incantations to call off Diana, Goddess of the Hunt.

Xander and Buffy?

What We Learn in This Episode:

1. That Amy's a witch, like mother, like daughter...
2. That Willow still has a yen for Xander.
3. Vampires really do have to be invited in..but we knew this already.
4. Xander really doesn't want to be every woman's cuddle-monkey.
5. Angel's nailed puppies to things before.

An Amusing Line:

Angel: "I guess I really did drive you crazy!" -- to Dru, upon seeing her make time with Xander.

An Amusing Exchange:

Buffy: "I seem to be having a slight case of nudity here."
Oz: "But you're not a rat... so call it an upside." --
in the basement, once the Buffyrat spell is reversed.
