Kingdom Plantae

Home The Kingdom Plantae is composed of eukaryotic multicellular orgnaisms. The cells of the organisms in this kingdom have cell walls. The organisms are autotrophic, meaning they make their own energy. To do this they use chlorophyll to capture light energy. The kingdom is divided into divisions, which are pretty much the same thing as phyla.

Division Bryophyta: This division is made up of non vascular plants. Non vascular means that the plant cannot transfer water through its body, but must rely on the environment to gain moisture. The more common name for this division is moss. These plants prevent erosion. They grow on the ground, trees, or rocks. They don't flower but reproduce by spores.

Division Anthophyta: In this division the seeds grow in an ovary. The ovary is in a flower and after fertilization the ovary grows and becomes a fruit. There are over 200,000 species and most fruits, and vegetables come from this division.

Division Filicophyta: This division is comprised of the plants commonly called ferns. These are vascular plants (water can travel through the body). They reproduce from spores, and can self-fertilize. They are mostly found in moist tropical aeas. They are characterized by thin leaves on stems.

Pheonix Canariensis
Habitat: Native of the Canary Islands, mild warm climate, likes volcanic soil.
Diet: Photosynthetic autotroph.
Other information: Commonly called the Canary Island Date Palm. It produces a small, inedible, round yellow fruit. Can grow up to 80 feet tall, and 40 feet in diameter. The trunk can grow to be 4 feet across. The trunk has a diamond pattern. The leaves are green and 15-20 feet long.
